Meet Cory Webb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Webb.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My art journey began as far back as I can remember. I discovered Bob Ross on TV and was fascinated by his process and how fun and easy he made painting look! I spent many rainy days throughout my childhood replaying taped episodes and trying to emulate his oil painting techniques. Art was something that felt very natural and expressive to me.

I was faced with a dilemma during my senior year of high school – pursue art school or my new interest in computers. The internet was just emerging as an everyday part of life, and I figured that a career in the IT field would be the ‘smart’ choice, so I chose that route. I spent the next eight years in a complete hiatus from art. It was completely absent from my life. My wife and I bought our first house together, and the barren walls started to speak to me. My inner fire for creating was starting to burn again, and the passion rekindled. People started to take notice of all the art that I was creating and started asking for commissions. Art quickly became a thriving side business while I was also working as a software developer.

After a relocation to the Houston area in 2012, my passion to paint had become so overwhelming that I quit my software job and chose to make art my sole focus. Just the other day someone called me an “emerging artist,” and at first, I wasn’t sure how to respond. What does that mean? I’ve considered myself an artist since I was a young boy and now I’m fortunate for the opportunity and thrilled to be able to share my creative work with others as a career.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint with various acrylic mediums and focus on a few different genre and styles. Nature and Energy have a strong influence on most of my work.

The artistic process involved in creating each piece is very important to me. I want my finished work to reveal hints of how it came to be. Texture is an extremely important element in each piece and is an additional dimension that I can use to express emotion and movement. I want my work to engage the viewer. I hope my work provokes thought and invites them to feel emotion, movement, and connection on a personal level.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As I have matured as an artist, my perspective has changed and in turn my definition of “What it means to be a successful artist?”. First, I have to really believe in what I’m making, take risks, and pour my heart and soul into each piece. Each piece has its own story. When someone connects with it, and they feel the energy and emotion; when they experience that story, then this is success. If I can achieve this type of connection through my art, then I believe sales and business opportunities will closely follow.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
