Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney King.
Courtney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
King Sovereign Farm is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is dedicated to 1)destroying obesity and malnutrition through education on sustainable farming and 2) showing love by feeding our community and providing educational and fun farming activities. The farm is located on 2 acres in Manvel, Texas. In 2017, the Holy Spirit gave the King Family this vision and it was officially formed in early 2019 and continues to develop and grow. As of right now, the harvest includes seasonal vegetables and we are preparing to grow over 300 Moringa trees with plans of harvesting and educating the community on the benefits of this superfood.
We are preparing to offer daycares and schools an opportunity to come to visit the farm, learn about organic and sustainable farming and the importance of consuming healthy foods. We also plan on partnering with our local elderly community to provide weekly farm bags (bags of fruits and vegetables) at no charge and providing them with regular events that bridge that gap between the youth and the elderly through meaningful experiences, growing veggies and social interactions on the farm.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a farm from the ground up has a ton of challenges but seeing the fruit as we tackle each project is priceless! After starting to plant our seedlings and getting flooded in the heavy spring of 2019, we quickly learned that we needed to establish a better infrastructure and a way for us to control the growing conditions. Between the heavy rains and the scorching heat, we came to the conclusion of building greenhouses to protect our crops. This was a tough learning experience after all of the time and energy we put into our first crops, but the struggle lead us to an even better plan for growing the farm and feeding our community.
Please tell us about King Sovereign Farms.
King Sovereign Farms is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and feeding our community, specifically the elderly population. As an organization, we are most proud of being obedient to God’s mandate and empowering people with knowledge and love through our distribution of fresh, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables and in the future, through our upcoming community farm events.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, we are building an additional ten greenhouses in order to feed more and more people in our community through our farm bag initiative. We are also in the process of building a community flex space to host educational events, farm-to-table dinner fundraisers as well as other community farm events. In the future, we’d like to partner with local schools and daycares to host educational field trips. We also plan on developing a trade school to teach teens and young adults sustainable farming as well as contracting skills that will help them obtain employment while providing local seniors with free home repair services.
