Meet Cymone Nelson of 729 Natural Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cymone Nelson

Hi Cymone, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a child, like many young girls, I was always infatuated with hair. However, my passion for it truly flourished during college. Throughout my collegiate journey, my roommate and best friend, Brooke, and I would provide natural hair advisement and services to many people on campus. And once she launched her hair care business, I realized I could really make this hair thing a side hustle! Being an English major, and Legal Studies minor, my goal in life was to be an educator or an entertainment lawyer; due to my love for music. But all of my friends and family would always say “ it’s funny that you think hair is going to be your side hustle, you just watch!”. Boy were they right !
After I graduated from Prairie View A&M University, I started my first job as a hairstylist! After a year of perfecting my skills , and finding my niche, I jumped out on faith and decided to work for myself. On that day, 729 Natural Hair Studio was born! I started out as a mobile stylist with minimal clientele. Now I am a proud , currently, home- based natural hair stylist servicing over 100 clients!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in this life ,worth value, will come easy. So I can admit that the road to becoming a stylist has not been the smoothest. However, one of my biggest struggles throughout this journey has been finding my community. Being a stylist is a very competitive profession; especially in Houston. But I wish more people would realize it doesn’t have to be. Everyone has something unique about them that makes them stand out from the rest. So we shouldn’t gate keep or alienate others due to fear of them being too much like us. Instead, there should be more open opportunity to inspire, educate, and uplift each other!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
729 Natural Hair Studio is , currently, a home-based natural hair salon located in Houston, Texas. Here we specialize in locs and natural hair. The service I’m most known for is called “ The Signature”. “The Signature” is a wash, retwist, and two strand twists and is also my top booked service !
Something that sets me apart from others would be my slogan: Here at 729 Natural Hair Studio, we are devoted to turning that “my hair can’t “ into a “my hair can”. I believe this sets me apart because my main goal is to get rid of any negative feelings and speech towards our hair and make sure each client leaves with all the tools, and education, they need to make their hair do what I can make it do !
What I’m most proud of, brand wise, is honestly the name of my business. My dad, who was my biggest inspiration, helped me come up with it and it is truly the conversation piece that he said it would be!
Lastly, I would love all the readers to know that 729 Natural Hair Studio is a place where you can relax, never be afraid to be yourself, and be treated like family!

How do you think about happiness?
The four things that bring me the most happiness would have to be doing hair, music, reading, and spending quality time with friends and family. Doing hair, as I mentioned previously, has always brought me joy! And it really makes me happy to see the look on my client’s face when they see their hair. It’s truly priceless! Music holds a very special place in my heart. It is one of my favorite forms of expression; including singing. If I’m having a bad day or need a pick me up, I can always count on my favorite jams to get the job done!

Reading is another one of my favorite hobbies. I see it as an opportunity to travel to a different time and place and feel all the characters’ experiences. It’s a great escape from day to day monotony.
Lastly, spending quality time with the ones I love is a huge priority for me. Ever since my dad passed in April, I make sure that I spend as much time with them as I can because you, simply, never know when you will get that chance again!
