Meet Cyndi Dinh of The Rustic Brush

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Dinh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The seed was planted Christmas of 2016 when my only wish on my Christmas list was for a craft room. I’ve always enjoyed crafting and personalizing gifts for family and friends because it was more expressive to me. In the Spring of 2017, my husband, Hai Ho, and I searched for a fun activity to do to celebrate the end of our church’s growth group session.

We found The Rustic Brush – Memorial and signed up for a workshop. The workshop was different from any art studio I have been to before with the use of orbital sanders, power tools, hammer and nails. Even the men in our group had a great experience. We met the original owners, Jonna Lee and Sandi Flores, during our visit and had an instant connection. We were offered an opportunity to open up our own store location in Katy, Texas. It was surreal, but Jonna and Sandi were extremely helpful during the process. Almost six months later, we opened our first The Rustic Brush – Katy. We had a lot to learn as business owners and boy did we have to learn quickly. Shortly after our first location opening and with more business knowledge, we decided to open our 2nd location in Sugar Land. After a year of operating our locations, Jonna and Sandi announced the exciting news of becoming a franchise. Due to time constraints as Franchisors, they offered us the opportunity to become owners of The Rustic Brush – Memorial. The Rustic Brush – Gleannloch Farms is our 4th and latest addition.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. We learned it is easier to take over a second gen storefront then to go through the stress of a build-out. We also learned to work together as business partners, which is completely different from being domestic partners. We learned to identify each other’s strengths and magnified those strengths in each other and our team. Most importantly, we learned we need to give grace… learn from our mistakes… and that if we are having fun so will our team and guests.

I would have never thought I would be business owner much less serial storefront owner. It has its challenges but the reward is beyond any expression I can give.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Rustic Brush – what should we know?
The Rustic Brush is a DIY instructor led workshop where family and friends can come together to build their own wooden sign and home decor. No experience in arts, crafts or power tools is required. We take pride in being Houston’s premier social crafting experience. We provide all the necessary tools and supplies so all you need to bring is your own food & drinks and have fun! We have free wine every Wednesday night, but if you can’t make it on Wednesdays everyone is welcome to bring their favorite beverage during our other workshops!

What sets us apart consist of a long list, BUT the one that excites me most is that we offer complete variety. You are able to craft the pre-selected project you desire during the same workshop with your family, friends and co-workers. For example, I can build a wooden sign while my husband can craft a doormat. It’s all project specific and you leave with a proud project you can use, display, or gift.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I attribute my blessings in my personal or business life to God. He has blessed me with a loving partner and wonderful children. They have been my biggest cheerleader and my greatest supporter – emotionally, physically and spiritually. Our TRB team has been such an instrumental part of our growth these past couple of years.

I believe when God blesses you with gifts and you use those gifts for His glory, He will trust you by blessing you with bigger and bigger gifts.

When I asked for a craft room for Christmas in 2016 and when the universe aligned it so perfectly for us to open The Rustic Brush -Katy, it fulfilled His promise. Matthew 7:7 says “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find.” Psalm 37:4 is one I’ve always kept close to heart as He promises “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
