Meet DaJonitta Richmond of Resilience Center of Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to DaJonitta Richmond

DaJonitta, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve wanted to become a physician since as long as I can remember, when I would watch “A Baby Story” on TLC and see the mothers giving birth. I went to Klein Oak High School in Spring, Texas. Then I went to Xavier University of Louisiana and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I graduated with my Medical Degree from UTMB Galveston and then completed psychiatry residency at John Peter Smith in Fort Worth Texas.

After training, I worked as a psychiatric inpatient hospitalist as well as an emergency room consultant. I later opened up my private practice , Resilience Center of Texas , where I now serve a diverse patient population in the outpatient setting. Most appointments are currently virtual, however we have in-person clinic approximately once per month. We are looking forward to expanding and having our own facility soon where we can serve the community in a wider capacity.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely NOT been smooth. Academic training was very difficult, and required full devotion to studying for about 12 years. I often felt that I was missing out on enjoying my 20s as I spent most of them in the library somewhere! There have also been many challenges in professional settings as a minority female physician in medicine, which I wasn’t quite prepared for, but am ultimately thankful for, as I have grown from them tremendously. We also did not get exposed to the business side of medicine in medical school, so opening up my own clinic required tackling a steep learning curve. As a business owner, I’m growing and the road is getting smoother over time, which I’m excited about.

We’ve been impressed with Resilience Center of Texas , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a psychiatrist and I diagnose and treat mental illnesses. I provide both therapy and medication management to adolescents and adults. What sets me apart is that I treat the whole person- (mind/soul, body and spirit) rather than one’s psychological experiences only. Most psychiatrists spend a few minutes per appointment, focusing on medicine management of symptoms, while my goal is to identify the root cause of illnesses and help patients heal. I treat diseases by helping people understand how their body functions as a whole, and by empowering them to make the lifestyle changes needed to minimize their likelihood of staying on psychiatric medications forever. I am also proud that I unashamedly share and incorporate my Christian faith into patient care, something most mental health professionals would advise against. I like to say that I do “Mental Health God’s Way”, and many come to our clinic because of this. I have been encouraged by seeing that such a place exists- where you can embrace faith and medicine at the same time, and there is beautiful fruit from doing so.

How do you define success?
Passionately pursuing your purpose as best as you can, with what you have, and maintaining peace while doing so.
