Today we’d like to introduce you to Damita White.
Damita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been off work for two years. My mom passed away and it threw me into a deep depression and my Lupus was out of my control. I couldn’t go to work like this so I started baking different items for my family mainly for my husband. He loves cakes and pies. He’s been trying to open a small restaurant, so I wanted us to have our own signature desserts. I would make items and send them to his job, pineapple-infused pound cake, Tcakes, Pear Cobbler. Just things that I was raised helping my grandmother bake.
Has it been a smooth road?
When God gave me the go-ahead, everything took off. Pound cake is very dense, a little dryer than your traditional store-bought cake. So I had to figure out a way to make it moister. I think I’ve gotten that concept down good. A lot of pleased customers.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a home-based bakery at this time. I specialize Fresh Fruit infused pound cake, Banana Pudding Pound Cake. I think the most popular item right now is the Banana Pudding Pound Cake. I’m is most proud of the support from everyone. The farthest I’ve mailed my baked goods is Westin Wisconsin.
I think my best goods are set apart because my goodies are homemade fresh fruit, I’m not the cookie-cutter type of bakery. I don’t mimic other bakers. All of my cakes are eccentric. Geared to eccentric people. Fresh fruit cakes, infused, peach cobblers.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houstonians welcome everyone. I absolutely believe anyone that wants to start a Bakery in Houston or surrounding areas should Pray about it, and move when God directs you. We love trying new different things. I would recommend making their new product different.
