Meet Dana Hewling of B.ID

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Hewling.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It seems I have slowly transitioned west, but Houston has captured my heart.

Raised in Jamaica, I moved to Florida a few months shy of 16, where I started community college. I later transferred to the University of South Florida, where I graduated in 2010 with my degree in Mass Communications specializing in Advertising. From my first internship at OGM Integrated Communications, the top Advertising Agency in Jamaica, I have been in love with my industry.

I was freelancing part-time since graduation until life led me to take the plunge to go full-time in 2014, just a year after relocating to Houston.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
HA! Is life as an entrepreneur ever smooth? No, but I guess that is how you learn the most and get better each year. As I mentioned, life led me to take the plunge to go out on my own; it wasn’t necessarily something I planned. I was new to Houston, with literally no connections plus I was naive as to what it took to run and grow a business. I’m a Creative; I love making things pretty. If you look at it from the E-Myth perspective, I am mostly a Technician; I love the work. I love design, but I knew to be successful, I had to don the Entrepreneur and Manager hats as well. Including finding clients, pricing, taxes, process, and many other aspects of a company that I needed to figure out—the internet can only teach you so much, and a lot of it is wrong or at least wrong for me. For a while, I was one of the many business owners just guessing my way through each day, but I always made it a point to do my best to learn, to improve, and to keep growing.

My determination was only a part of the equation, however. Over the years, I have been blessed with countless people who have helped pave the way for me. From super supportive and encouraging family to my mentor who was instrumental in the foundational years to amazing clients and of course the best team ever; past, present, future thank you to everyone who played a role in building up my company and myself as a person.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the B.ID LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
Founded in 2014, B.ID has been at the forefront of providing businesses branding and other creative services across Houston and its surrounding areas as well as beyond the bounds of the State of Texas. We have been fortunate enough to help various organizations present themselves and communicate with their target in ways they couldn’t before. We find the solutions necessary to help them obtain a positive transformation in a remarkable way. That has always been our mission and always will be. This is even more impactful considering the majority of our clients are minority-owned businesses or organizations.

We are a full-service, dedicated branding and design solutions agency that provides Branding, Identity/Logo Design, Print, & Graphic Design, Copywriting, Website Design & Development, and Marketing solutions. Doing remarkable work is not just about creating ‘pretty’ work; it is about changing the way businesses pursue branding and other marketing efforts so they can ultimately achieve their respective objectives and goals. We are branding-first and work towards implementing strong branding strategies that will elevate their businesses in ways they have not seen before, which allows us to be impactful daily. Great branding can change perceptions, attitudes, and can help move their target audience to action. Most recently we have been included in Expertise.com’s list of the Top 23 (out of 374) Branding Professionals serving Houston.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I can’t call it luck (good or bad). I do, however, believe that I am blessed and highly favored. It is this belief that helps keep pushing me forward. I am one to appreciate the negative moments that I’ve gone through (which there have been many) as they help me get to and prepare me for the next level as well as to appreciate blessings to come.

An early blessing was meeting my mentor Merrill, who was pivotal in those early years and who will forever have a special place in my heart. Continued blessings are some super amazing clients who not only utilize our services, they support (and champion) our growth over the years with ongoing business and referrals. From those who have literally been with us since year one, to newer clients who already feel like family; thank you for entrusting us with your vision. You are all remarkable.

Lastly, but not least, thank you to Carlos our talented copywriter. Going on three years with our team he has seen quite a bit of those highs and lows as we work our way towards remarkable. I appreciate you, your talent, work ethic, and creativity.
