Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Andre Gosey.
Known for his award-winning syncopations behind the drums as Quick Sticks artist D’Andre Gerard Gosey is set to showcase his skills like never before through Thank You For Leaving Me. TY4L is an 11-track project filled with an emotional body of work sparked from a toxic divorce that pushed him in the direction of completing a personal goal to record an album, something he always wanted to accomplish. By day Gerard teaches music at a local charter school for leadership and by night pours his creativity and passion into TY4L. “What hurt the most was, I was told my blindness was holding her (ex-wife) back, and I was a burden; she wanted to leave. That cut through my heart and soul really deep. My self-esteem was hurt.” Gosey stated.
Diagnosed at the age of 5 with RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa), a degenerative eye condition affecting the retina, Gosey has always had to find ways to overcome. Becoming a beacon of hope to those who have visual impairments, the soul-singer prevailed academically through grade school and college at Texas Southern University. As the grandson of Houston Blues Legend I. J. Gosey, being in music entertainment was inevitable. The R&B crooner was a band member in The Ocean of Soul at Texas Southern University, performed and traveled the country with a popular cover band (The City), became a grand finalist in the 2014 Guitar Center Drum Off, featured on KTSU Radio, appeared on Travel Channel during SXSW 2016, NewsFix CW39, Great Day Houston with Deborah Duncan and much more. His influences are Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, PJ Morton, Cory Henry, George Duke and his little princess (daughter) affectionately known as Lady Bug.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been lots of ups and downs. I believe my challenges have shaped me into the person I am today and have made me more creative. Getting around then without a vehicle can be a challenge sometimes, but I have good friends and family that help me out when I need it. My visual impairment has forced me to develop my “ear,” and I feel like I can hear the music in a deeper way. I also can play my instruments without looking at them. It’s about taking what you got and getting the most out of it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your work – what should we know?
My mission is very simple. I want to spread my gift of music too as many people as possible. Whether that be performing live and inspiring people at concerts or teaching aspiring musicians in the classroom. It’s about spreading positivity to everyone I come into contact with.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency is the key. Once you have a vision, it’s about doing something every day towards the attainment of that goal. Never give up and take one set at a time.
