Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Cardoza.
Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a native Texan from the Houston area and have been in the Loop for the past decade. I now live and work in East End. Since youth, creativity was always a part of my life and has manifested through writing, drawing, materials, objects, music, technology and more. As my goals pivoted, I found Graphic Design to be the perfect synthesis of these outlets. I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Houston in Spring 2016 and continued to hone my craft at multi-disciplinary agency and studio environments in Houston, such as BrandExtract and Principle. Through my experience, I’ve learned how to better communicate and collaborate with people, which has afforded me the ability to work in a more flexible manner with different companies and individuals.
Has it been a smooth road?
I believe we are a transformative reflection of our experience, and I wouldn’t be where I’m at today if it weren’t for a few giant potholes and the support of the inspiring women in my family. Everyone endures their own struggle, but we have to decide for ourselves what drives us to self-actualization. Sometimes you have to take risks for your happiness, but I think that makes you appreciate the ride, the loved ones you’re with, and where you’re at so much more.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I operate an independent graphic design practice that focuses on concept and design development for projects related to branding, web, print, packaging, motion, and more. I work with individuals, start-ups, companies, and agencies to produce engaging design solutions. Collaboration is a cornerstone, and thankfully I’ve had the opportunity to work with many talented people along the way.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As technology evolves, I think design is moving towards a greater focus on people. There is a growing need for engaging work that genuinely relates to us as people and not just consumers of this complex society. We all participate in a feedback loop that contributes to and shapes the world around us–it’s a design of grand proportions. Diverse collaboration will be key in moving towards a more empathetic and circular economy. To better understand our impact on the environment and society as the scale and complexity of issues increase, we need to think of other people and our planet more critically.
