Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Carter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a true admirer of music. Falling in love with artists like the Isley Brothers, Switch, Keith Sweat and many more. At the time, I was very young so lyrics didn’t really hold my attention. It was more about the unique sounds coming from behind the voice, but as life would go on, sports would take over my life blocking all thoughts of being a creator of music. I was now the listener. This phase didn’t last long as I would find myself playing the trombone in the 5th grade. Being a part of a band was never the plan but it was a blessing in disguise. Now I was the student learning how to read music and play by ear something that would come in handy years down the line. My sports phase would hit again and last for several years into my high school years. I actually begin to start making ( Chopped & Screwed ) Tapes around this time (2015) with my friend JJ. Let’s just say these tapes got us about 3-4 million plays a piece on Soundcloud. This would also get a lot of our music taken off of the site, and emails from labels talking about copyright infringement. All this would do is spark another flame as JJ would expose me to a Computer Program that lets you make music called Fruity Loops (FL Studio ). Amazed by this program, I went straight to YouTube to learn every bit of information I could about it. I will be completely honest because maaaan the frustration that grew over me some nights would drive a man insane. But let’s fast forward to when I would actually leave college (PVAMU) to pursue my music career. I would actually say this was my first year (2016) of Music Production and everything I needed fell into my lap. It was crazy because I didn’t have to pay for speakers, midis, vsts or anything it was all given from associates. Later I would by my own equipment and start my own label
“ BLACK LABEL KARTEL “ aka BLK in 2018. Which would also be the year I would find out I was adopted. But wait, this was the biggest twist I had a younger brother (BLK Finness) who also was a producer with way more years under his belt 12 years to be exact. The connection was perfect. He was the missing half I was looking for. With his love for trap music and my love for oldies and R&B. We learned from each other and put both of our sounds together to make a Producer Duo. Now everything was ticking we would catch local attention, add a few artists to the label ( Dinero SINATRA, BG Nu Money, Zae Montana ) and would actually link with some artist & producers from YG label 400 ent ( Buddaru, FollowJojoe ) through a mutual friend ( Producer DamnDaniel ). I would actually do a whole mixtape with Buddaru, Slim 400, FollowJojoe, YG, and Mozzy called (The Good, The Bad, The Brazy ) in 2019. This would open many doors for us with Cali artists and around the US. Now the year is 2020 and I am officially a Music Label Owner, Manager, Engineer, and Producer for BLK, making music with all types of new artists like Big Proyo and now reaching into new genres like EDM. All I can tell you guys it keep your eyes on the lookout for BLK. We are coming to take over the World of Music.
Has it been a smooth road?
Most of the time, it has been smooth. But like all, I’ve had some rough patches like dealing with my father’s recent passing, low funds, and dealing with family and friends. I’ve had people step on my dreams and tell me I won’t make it ( words from my own family ). I’ve also had associates try to steal my ideas and my sound but all is resolved so I dont have struggles only lessons.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with BLACK LABEL KARTEL ( BLK ) – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
BLK is an upcoming Record Label based out of Houston’s own Hiram Clarke. We specialize in music production, mainly instrumentals.
We’ve become popular for our unique & diverse selection of beats. I think what sets us apart from the rest is that not everyone is able to use our instrumentals. You have to be up for the challenge. Strong lyrics required. Lol
I’m proud of how far BLK has made it. The focus and dedication, long nights and early mornings and how we’ve come together in the toughest times.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about Houston is or culture. From our Cars, Food, Music and our Beautiful woman, I can’t tell you what’s number one on my list. I also love the talent that we are bringing up its making things competitive in the music industry.
Now my dislikes, Houston has this thing where we don’t won’t to move on from the Old Heads way of doing things. Which kind of creates a crab in a bucket mentality. Old Heads I’m sorry it’s time to take the back burner and Everyone needs to humble themselves and stop acting like superstars. Cut the BS and let’s make Houston #1 for scouting music talent.
