I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Making the decision to start your own business takes a lot of prayer, confidence, perseverance and of course support from your family and friends.

I feel blessed that my clinic did well from the start. I think it was a combination of location, marketing and networking and getting the HealthPro Chiropractic and Acupuncture (HPCA) name out there before we opened. However, the road to now was not always a smooth one.

Hurricane Harvey proved to be the biggest obstacle in that it completely flooded the clinic with 36-inches of water and we had to essentially dispose of everything. Fortunately, with the help of local businesses and networks, HPCA was able to open back up a week later in a temporary space with the bare essentials in regards to equipment and supplies needed to operate day-to-day. We ended up staying in this temporary space for almost 7 months while renovations took place.

And although Hurricane Harvey dealt such a blow to not only my business but to many people’s homes and other businesses, it proved to be a blessing in disguise as I was able to get my “dream” clinic that I love coming to every morning.

Covid would have to be the second major obstacle that we had to navigate thru as it was so new at the time with an unclear future. We never shut down completely but shortened the work days down to 3-4 hours and only saw essential cases. As with most businesses, I had to furlough my entire staff, I ran my clinic with a one-man crew (myself) and just the outlook of a new normal was quite stressful. But once Texas opened back up 50% a month later, we were back at it (with new protocols) and I had to bring my staff right back. I think the stress and mental anxiety affected a lot of people physically and getting chiropractic treatment was much needed to help relieve that so we got busy fairly quickly.

What matters most to you? Why?
Family and faith, 1a and 1b.

My family is my world. From my family, I grew up with to the family I have now.

Growing up, my parents made it a point to put us first and really gave my sister and I the tools to be successful. They came here from the Philippines without a certain future or clear path; just their name, a worth ethic and their education. And they worked really hard to provide for us while at the same time making sure they were there for us as a support system. They showed me the importance of coming from nothing and being successful; and not monetarily successful per se, but a successful parent, a successful provider, and a successful role model of how to be there for your kids. From eating together as a family every night to keeping us involved in activities to being present in those said activities.

I’ve carried those same principles to my family now and I’m fortunate to have a wife who shares those same values. My wife and I are very big on the importance of a strong family structure. We eat dinner together every night, we pray together, we bring all of our kids to each of their activities so they know their entire family is present to support them. We make it a point to be there for the smallest of milestones to the biggest of achievements, even at their young age and make sure they are congratulated by all of us… We make sure to shower them with love and guidance but also discipline and teach them right from wrong. Even grocery store trips are a family affair because we want them to feel being a part of a family unit and not be just a family members. There is no shortage of love that we want them to feel.

The “Dannug” name means a lot to me personally because of the journey my parents took to get here and the journey myself has taken today with my own family. At the end of the day, our name is what we have. And when people hear the name “Dannug”, my hope is for it to represent a family who are friendly, respectful, honest, hard-working, family-oriented, and faith-based. I want our kids to share those principles with their kids, and then with their kids and so forth.

My wife and kids are my life and it’s been extra special to have their grandparents just as involved who have been such a huge help to us. We consider our family to be very lucky.

And I can’t give enough praise to my wife who is my everything. Who has been there from the beginning and actually even before. She encouraged to start my own clinic, supported me 100%, guided me when I needed it and has been there for all the ups and downs. She supported the idea of me creating a running group in the area which was not gonna be an easy task, especially fresh off having our first child but she knew it was something I felt I needed to do so she was there to support. Every race I have whether it’s a 5k and all the way to a marathon, she will make sure to round up our kids and have them there to cheer me on….even for those races that go past four hours. She’s a rock star….my anchor who keeps me grounded. She’s a shy and quiet one but her heart is big and her love is pure.

Faith is just a notch below family as religion and our beliefs in God are the foundations for how we want to live our lives. And we want to make sure our kids grow up with a strong Catholic foundation because faith is what moves us to be better people.
