Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Torres.
Hi Daniel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well, I started as a little boy picking up trash at demolition projects, where residential roofs get completely stripped to receive a whole makeover. At the time, I was simply trying to earn my father and brother’s validation or respect so that I could be part of their crusade. My labor and blisters didn’t benefit anyone at the time, but soon life was to take a turn with my father being deported. My brother Michael (21 at the time) had to become the breadwinner for our household of 5 (I was 11), I then knew that every ounce of help I could assist with would somehow payout. So, my mission began with the desire to one day relieve my brother from the heavy bounty my father left him. My father was no loving father; he was a bad influencing provider. My brother, Michael, kept a roof under my mother, siblings and I until we could mature and provide for ourselves and take care of our mother, collectively. – Life progressed, I turned 18, pursued a trackable work reputation and an associate’s degree in business so that I could be a credible individual. I further sacrificed a year doing heavy labor in the oil and gas industry and promoting myself out there, so that I could have enough money to give back and provide for myself during my transition of learning this busy industry I’m in now; Storm restoration. I am a walking business now, and the best part of it is that my brother doesn’t have to worry about another boss taking advantage of him, because we’re the bosses now, and we’re here to stay.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no, not a smooth road at all. It’s been a painful one. On my road, I have had to go through puzzling business technicalities, debts, tears, failed marketing ideas, clientele deceptions and thefts. I have had to stay in my lane regardless of how quickly similar businesses with years of experience were to steal my business. I have had to learn from every hand I was dealt with, whether the hand was for or against me. Putting my business name out there took thousands of greetings and business cards, thousands of “no, thank yous” and hundreds of abrupt door slams and/or hideous comments. A few negative experiences like those are enough to shut you down. That is why purpose was so important; Purpose awakens persistence. Persistence allows individuals to find a path to their destination, regardless of how many dead ends or rock bottoms they hit. Like a maze.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in home insurance claims for storm devastations, meaning I assist homeowners throughout the technicalities of an insurance claim process while restoring their property back to its fully functioning condition. Say for example, a tornado affects a neighborhood of 60 homes: I can partake in restoring those properties while assisting the homeowners in receiving their insurance coverage benefits so that they don’t have to pay for all their damages out of pocket.
I am mainly known for roofing-related projects and repairs, since that is our most common service in demand during the hurricane season here in Houston.
What I’m most proud of is the freedom I created that allows me to make great ethical decisions. I am mainly proud to have the ability to respect my team by paying them their worth, and improving their work environment, compared to the norm of how they are treated in this field. They work very hard and they deserve more than a minimal check. They have families and dreams too.
What sets me apart from others is my business knowledge and my ability to do much of the work. In regards to our company, we’re direct and don’t have to subcontract our work to another business. At most, we’re a one-stop-shop when it comes to home improvements. I am also super diligent, bilingual, and local.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Oh yes, the teachings of Jim Rohn, Ted Talks, The books in the Bible, the app called, “BrainFM” (requires a subscription, but it helps maximize your productivity and focus with neurological music for whatever the mood or task may be). Chess: I strongly believe that everyone that has a curiosity or career surrounded by a high level of social volume should learn how to play, because life deals us thousands of challenges similar to chess puzzles, where we have to strategize, decide, sacrifice and value certain things or events more than others for the sake of climbing the health, wealth, love and happiness ladder just a slight bit higher. Chess allows you to practice many life experiences that you might want to avoid in real life while learning certain figurative hypotheticals that the odds in essence, can throw back at you. Tons of psychology and situational awareness enter the chat when playing chess. Chess will teach you a lot.
