Meet Dareas Scott of Dareas Scott Photography and Nightfall Motion Pictures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dareas Scott.

Dareas, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my journey when I was in kindergarten. I vividly remember watching HBO and being consumed by the beauty I would see in the movies and say to myself I want these things in my life. As I grew older the feeling remained but it was tucked behind a new but fleeting hobby, basketball. It was the only sport I played throughout middle school and high school. but I always knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do. At the beginning of my senior year of high school, my mom had me and my two siblings create a business and come up with a slogan. My company was Frost Photography, a moment frozen in time.

Fast forward to the end of that year and my friend stole a camera from the yearbook class and gave it to me for my birthday. Since the camera was stolen I didn’t have a charger so once it died my photographic journey was halted until September when I became a Freshman at Lamar University as a Medical Technology major… I bought a charger and I was basically vlogging my life but not uploading it. I started taking some photos of my roommate and my girlfriend. I was having so much fun that I switched my major to communication and emphasized in Film Studies.

That next semester my girlfriend took a photography course and one of her assignments was symmetry. She took a photo of some railroad tracks and after that, I saw the printed image I was shot back to my HBO childhood. I decided at that moment that this what I was going to do and it’s been my only job for 8 years now. My then girlfriend now fiance, Ashley Thompson, my ambition, and obviously God are the reasons that I’ve made it this far.in my career as a photographer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been really smooth but there has been debris in the way but I have good tires and I keep my oil changed with an at least a quarter tank of gas. Most of the obstacles I’ve faced are lifestyle adjustments. I will stay up for a full 24 hours playing with gear and generally be engulfed in editing.

So my sleep has been impacted greatly as I’ve become more successful. In 2016, I shot so many wedding across the country that I grew a few grey hairs. and I was only 24. I was really irresponsible with my earnings so I would immediately buy new gear and that put a little pressure on my relationship but I’ve definitely kicked that bad habit.

Dareas Scott Photography/Nightfall Motion Pictures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is a company who’s primary focus is creating beautiful images, still and moving (film). We approach everything with just make it look good. We are known to a lot of people for one service or the other and I believe it’s because we do such a good job at both. If a person comes looking for photography, they will find great photography and the same thing goes with video.

From what I’ve heard from countless people is that what separates us is our quality. Our videos are cinematic and our photos are clear and to that, I say how else should they be?

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by the objective steps that you’ve take to your goals because if you’re making progress everyone else should be able to see it not just me and I don’t mean that other people should define your success. I’m saying that real progression and even regression is seen by all.

Maybe not all at once but it shouldn’t just be in your head. I look back at photos and videos we make and say man I remember when we couldn’t provide this or do that because we didn’t have the skill set or whatever. If I can look at it as the past then I’m not in that place anymore and I’m moving forward not backwards.
