Meet Datreese Thomas of The Melanie Dolls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Datreese Thomas.

Hi Datreese, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

To be brief, I deep-dived into a journey of self-discovery after experiencing many challenges during my freshman year at the University of Houston. My journey of becoming led to my first business venture, The Melanie Dolls. Where I wanted to empower black girls in their journey of becoming as well.

As a woman, I have learned that it is essential that you know yourself completely, you see yourself completely, and you love yourself completely. So I established a doll company that I created through my own black girl experience that teaches courage, self-love, and how to feel exceptionally beautiful inside and out.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No! It has not been easy. I have experienced academic failures and spiritual challenges, and I had to learn to navigate through an imperfect world while trying to become the woman I wanted to be. But the many oppositions I faced have led me to the most beautiful destination. So I’m definitely grateful for the rocky road.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Along my self-development journey as a student at The University of Houston, I created and established The Melanie Dolls. Which is a black doll company that actively works to impact, empower, and positively transform the lives of black girls. My company has created an avenue where collectively, black girls can feel seen, and individually they can see themselves. Each Melanie Doll accurately represents the black demographic and teaches girls how to feel exceptionally beautiful inside and out, learn to gain self-love, and develop courage—ultimately, equipping them with the confidence and courage that is necessary to influence their limitless potential in life.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very optimistic and adventurous. I was always the student that was in trouble for talking too much in class. On the other hand, I have always had a very high will to achieve, along with an outgoing, charismatic, and relentless personality.
