Meet Dave Perez of Tejas Brothers in Performing at Dosey Doe in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Perez.

Dave, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began learning to play the accordion at age 22. After just 6 weeks of practicing, I had my first opportunity to perform in front of people. In 2006, I helped form my first band… a Tex-Mex Honky Tonk outfit called Tejas Brothers. The band has four albums that have been released.

I am the main songwriter of the group, my main influences coming from Country, Tejano, Blues and Rock n Roll artists such as George Jones, Merle Haggard, Mingo Saldivar, Ramon Ayala, Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, The Coasters, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Steve Miller and Tom Petty. After almost 12 years of constant touring, mostly around Texas, the group has earned the recognition from the governor’s music office as one of the best live acts in the state.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a smooth road, but uphill most of the way. It is hard to define our music into one genre, therefore mainstream radio has never fully supported what we’ve released. It’s too Country for Tejano stations, too Tejano for Country stations, and too much of both for Blues and Rock n Roll. That being said, live audiences have been our best friends. People at a live show don’t care what it’s called; they just know that it’s good. So, little by little, we’ve been gaining support, mostly through word of mouth and grassroots marketing.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tejas Brothers – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Tejas Brothers is a fun band that makes music people want to hear but just can’t seem to find in the mainstream media. I play the accordion and I’m known to always be smiling… because, how do you play the accordion and not smile? 🙂

We are most proud of all of the support from people who see or hear something that they like and make a decision to get behind it, even if no one they know has told them about it, yet. Just listen to Boogie Woogie Mamacita, Live a Little More or Wiggle from the Tejas Brothers to see what sets us apart from other bands.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We don’t have any plans for change. It’s been a blessing to be able to keep putting music and shows together and have the support from those who want to hear and see us. We have noticed a lot more people showing up in the audience, though.
