Meet David Brunet of Innovation Spark Inc in Richmond

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Brunet.

David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started Innovation Spark 5 Years ago, with the idea of bringing the Maker Faire to Houston. Our first 2 events were at the Stafford Center, and as we outgrew the facility we moved into the George R Brown Center. The last 2 Maker Faires have grown and we are now officially a Feature Faire on our 5th Anniversary.

The organization is run by:
David Brunet – President (VP of Innovation at DLZP Group an organization focused on Cloud Services) and Andrew Lynch – Vice President – A leader in the robotics community within the Texas area.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The growth of the Maker Faire in Houston has been a challenging but fun Journey, as we continue to grow the participation of the local community. The biggest challenge has been getting into the right places and people to educate them on what the Maker Movement is about. It is still a bit misunderstood, in the context that it is so broad in its application. The best way for us to convince people to support the organization has been to invite them to the event and see what it is with their own eyes.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Innovation Spark Inc – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Innovation Spark is a Non-Profit that we originally formed to be the host for the Houston Maker Faire, it has since grown into a organization that helps bring the Making Community together for events around the Houston area. For example we now are the official organizer of the Comicpalooza Makerspace and this year we helps the Region 4 Education Services Center organize a weekend of Making conference focused on Teacher.

I am most proud of the accomplishments we have achieved in terms of fostering the sharing community and bringing all the organizations together to work on a common goal. The goal being to introduce young minds to their potential and to encourage them to put more effort into their STEAM education. A maker faire is a great place for individuals to get inspired and reach for their dreams.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would like for Houston to become the Largest Maker Faire in the world, We have all the elements to make it happen with the Space Available to us at the George R Brown Convention Center, of which we are only using 1/5th of so far. I also look forward to spending more time in the community at school doing smaller maker events to get more kids interested in the Maker Movement.
