Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. David Buelna.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife, Dr. Molly Obergfell Buelna and I started off as associates in a nearby practice. In 2014, we decided it was time to take our big step and open up our own practice with our own set of values. We also got pregnant with our first son during that time. It was a difficult and sometimes scary process because of the amount of money required to start up a veterinary facility, especially going in alone. The building and construction kept reaching delays due to permitting from the City of Katy, which cost us thousands on top of our already outstanding loan. On top of that, our son Logan David was born premature at 25 weeks and was hospitalized, fighting for his life for 3 months. I found myself working in the mornings and visiting him in the evenings. At Texas Children’s, I would be working on the plans and making decisions for our future business. My wife stayed by his side and protected him for all 3 months, every day, day in and day out. Close to opening in November, we lost our job as associates (our boss were not too happy to find out we were opening our own business) and had to go on COBRA insurance to continue to care for our son at Texas Children’s. In December of 2015, we opened our doors. Since then, our loyal clients (and patients!) have supported us and we are now looking for an additional vet to fill our growing Circle B Family. We had our second son in 2016 (Full term!) and our now starting to create our next stepping stone. Looking back, it seems overwhelming, but it’s amazing what one can accomplish if you just keep fighting for what you believe in.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Health insurance was the major hurtle given our situation. Building permits were very difficult to acquire in the City of Katy. This alone costs us 4-5 months delayed and thousands of dollars. When we moved in, our grace period was over and we were already paying for rent. Also, competition is stiff in Katy, but we manage to create our niche. Funds got very tight towards the end. Careful planning was key to staying afloat.
