Today we’d like to introduce you to David Gow.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ten years ago, when we founded Gow Media, I don’t think anyone in our group envisioned what we have become. We sought to build an independent, locally-owned sports radio station — to do one thing really well. Today we have emerged as a multi-platform media company, with two content categories: sports and lifestyle.
This evolution has taken place due to opportunity, necessity and luck. Underlying all has been a great deal of work and commitment by our team and our investors.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like most ventures, it seems that nothing has been easy.
We have endured two hurricanes that damaged and required rebuilding, our infrastructure. We had a key manager who self-destructed with substance abuse. And the competitive landscape has become more intense, with new media, social media and changing consumer habits.
But we have persevered, in large part due to the attributes of our management team. Our group has evolved over the years, but the team today is resilient and focused. The team is also really savvy about creating innovative marketing plans for clients in a multi-platform world.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gow Media — CultureMap; SportsMap; ESPN 97.5 FM Houston; SB Nation Radio story. Tell us more about the business.
Two things. First, I love our assets:
-CultureMap is the leading online destination for lifestyle content.
-ESPN 97.5 is the leading sports station in Houston.
-SportsMap.com is growing leaps and bounds.
-And SB Nation Radio is one of the country’s largest sports radio networks, syndicating sports shows and updates to over 500 radio stations across the country.
Second, the assets work well together:
Increasingly, we see a large intersection between sports and culture. And we are executing a large amount of cross-promotion between our sites and stations, recycling audiences and lifting all platforms. We can execute really compelling multi-platform marketing campaigns for our clients.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Mostly, I feel blessed to have met the people who make up the company, our employees, investor group and advertising partners.
