Meet David Peck of Miles David in Tanglewood and Memorial

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Peck.

Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My first degree was in classical cello. While I was studying, I realized that I loved music too much to be a frustrated musician. During my studies, I had worked in visuals at Ralph Lauren. One thing led to another and I decided to move to Paris to study fashion Parsons Paris School of Art & Design. Because I had a previous degree, I was able to apply as a transfer student. I ended up living and working in Paris for over 4 years. While I was in Paris, I met my wife Michelle. She was from Houston, so after a two year stint in New York, we moved to Houston so that she could be closer to her family while her mother went through the final stages of ovarian cancer. We’ve been in Houston for almost eight years now, and it definitely feels like home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being in the fashion business has definitely had its ups and downs. I’m a forever an optimist, so I’d like to think that the triumphs have outweighed the struggles.

It’s a long story, but I ended up closing the first business that I started in Houston and relaunched with Miles David about two years ago. What I value about the opportunity to start fresh is to learn from successes and failures and prioritize what really matters to me and to my customers. Every experience is an opportunity to learn, so if I don’t get it right the first time, I try to not to repeat the same mistake.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Miles David story. Tell us more about the business.
It takes time and patience, but I’m happy with where we are now. In a strange way, we are closer to an older European model of clothes making. I know each and every one of our customers. I know what they like and we have a relationship. Fashion is too often about the latest trends, and we are the antithesis of that. Every item is made here in our atelier. There’s a pride that comes from knowing that the clothes we make are made to last.

When a client walks into the store, there is a whole selection of ready-made options for them. Many of them are limited edition. Most of our gowns are one of a kind. It’s a fantastic way to make sure that you’re not in the same dress as your friend at the same gala.

We also specialize in made to order, custom clothing. Our customers can customize something as simple as a silk t-shirt to a wedding or ball gown. The quality of what we offer for the price is really hard to find.

What makes us different is that we make the clothes to fit you and not the other way around. So many women get frustrated shopping at traditional stores, especially for special occasion dresses and gowns because they can find their size or the right color, or there’s something missing like a sleeve. We can customize what we have or start from just an idea. The whole process is fairly simple, and we try to make it as stress free as possible.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The fashion industry is in turmoil right now. Traditional retail stores are having a hard time shifting to the demands. The internet really changed the way we shop, so the industry as a whole is trying to catch up with technology.

Over the next few years, I think you will see a return to smaller companies that are offering a limited or customizable selection. Customers want to have a personal experience and feel special. We have access to so much that stores and designers are going to need to offer a more intimate experience to differentiate themselves.
