Meet David Michael Wyatt

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Michael Wyatt.

David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I like so many other artists who grew up singing in the church. Music honestly is what attracted me to the church. Music was such a strong drawing force for me. Then to have so many musical family members that I was able to look up, sing with, and draw major inspiration from was a plus for me. They helped point me in a direction in hopes that one day I’d produce quality music myself. It worked and I love the journey and I am excited to share it with the world.

It was recognized that I could actually sing by my preschool teacher. She sent a note home to my mother and that opened the door for me to perform my first solo outside of the church at my preschool graduation. I remember the song was “The Greatest Love of All” by the legendary Whitney Houston.

From there you know, just like every other singing church kid you sing at everything. funerals, church concerts, weddings, birthdays, school functions, and then all of sudden you are known in your city or town as “the singer” loll. But as an aspiring artist, you desire more and want to spread your wings to fly higher. So after high school graduation, I pursued a life in music and that then led me to Berklee College of Music. There I studied music business as a Vocal Principal. From Berklee I jumped into full-time music. I began my journey as a working musician. I started to get calls from all the popular singing shows. Out of my excitement, I’d go through the audition process and proceed very well only to never hear from them. But I would still push through with hopes of one day getting that big break. Of course hindsight I can say that wasn’t the journey for me. God has another plan and ultimately his plan is the best plan. Even if I can’t see what the end looks like.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been easy for sure. But, I think life has a way of giving you those breaks and those small crumbs to keep you coming back for more. Whether it is a compliment of how your song or performance touched a person or whether its hindsight looking back and you see where you use to be. Learning to appreciate the present and live in the now is important for any person especially an aspiring artist.

It’s all easier said than done. As an artist, you really fall under the umbrella of in the words of the legendary Erykah Badu “I’m sensitive about my ish”. And under that umbrella, you deal with whether or not people will like your presentation, will people like your voice, will people like your original songs. These things are near a dear to every artist so it’s not easy and takes courage to give these things to the world. It’s kind of like our babies, you know? So, I struggled with a lot of fear and insecurities. And in all honesty, it’s caused procrastination and delays. It became much easier to sing in the background than to stand in front. So I became complacent and comfortable. Although singing in the back has its place and taught me many lessons, in my heart I wanted more and knew there was more to be had.

Now I am working as an independent artist. And the obstacles that come with that are seemingly endless. You are doing everything yourself and having to dig from the ground up. So the process seems long and a lot more difficult than the way of being signed to a major record company. You hear a lot of no’s and a lot of people can’t see what you see in your vision so having to push yourself and be patient and waiting for the right time is not always easy.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
My business is the business of entertainment. I am known as a singer who travels the country singing and performing. I am most proud of my journey and the fact that I consistently persevere through it all. But, also some of my latest accomplishments and features. For example, my voice and song have been featured on NBA 2k, I’ve been heard during the 2020 NBA finals on the apple commercial, also appeared on Late Night TV on Jimmy Kimmel and I have toured the country successfully with my brother Houston Rapper Tobe Nwigwe. We are currently finishing up an EP to be released very soon.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity! Real recognize real. I think as an artist that is extremely important. It is important because as an artist, being relatable is what makes you believable. You can only be relatable and believable if you are standing and presenting what is true and real for you.
