Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Theriot.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My degree is in Exercise Physiology. When I started in the workforce in 1990, personal training was not widespread and very few people did it full-time. I was at The Hills Fitness Center in Austin when personal training really started to take of as a profession. I was asked to open a personal training studio in Houston by the founders of Timberline Fitness Studio in Austin in 1996. I have since bought them out and remained in the same location.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening up was the most difficult period financially. Living and breathing the business has helped keep the road smoother than it might have been. If you are not TRULY passionate about fitness, I do not recommend opening your own studio. However, for me, it is the life. Interacting with the clients/members is the true joy. It’s like working at a healthy Cheers where everyone is working out instead of drinking beer!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Timberline Fitness Studio – what should we know?
We are known by many near us as The Cheers of health clubs. We try to know every client by name. Our goal is to have every person feeling good about themselves when they leave. Life is tough and many people walk in feeling the burden. What I am most proud of is if they leave feeling renewed, refreshed, and positive. Timberline tries to combine kindness and good nature with intense exercise. Being profitable as a business is necessary to survive, but, true happiness can only happen if we make our clients happy about their experience at Timberline.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency is critical. Of course, there are many characteristics that determine the success of a business. But, if our clients cannot depend on us, nothing else will matter.

I can attest to the greatness of Timberline and the owner Dean Theriot. I was one of the early clients at Timberline and Dean was my trainer. He kept me on track and fit for the 10 years I was a member. The studio is spectacular, friendly and very professional. After leaving Houston it has been a challenge to find a place like Timberline.
