Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Addison.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Deanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2008 my oldest son was three, and for my birthday that year, I received my first Nikon D60 camera. I had no idea how to use it, so it stayed on auto most of the time. After reading blog after blog and taking a few classes, I slowly learned how to use my camera. My son was my model most of the time, but eventually, I tip toed into taking pictures of my son’s friends. Gradually word spread. I have some amazing friends that quickly told others, and it really snowballed from there. At the time, I only wanted to focus on children and families. I had zero experience with newborns other than being a mom to my own. I missed out on the opportunity to take my first born’s pictures; his newborn pictures were done at Walmart! It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my 2nd son in 2010 when I did my first newborn session. It was a family I had previously photographed several times before, and they wanted me to capture this special moment. I was honored, but terrified at the same time. My first newborn session was definitely an experience. I had no idea what I was doing, but I LOVED every single detail of that day. It sparked something and I wanted to let that feeling grow. I went full speed, I absorbed as much as I could, took multiple editing classes, traveled to Austin and Indianapolis to mentor with some of the most talented newborn photographers in the industry and watched countless hours of online workshops. It was an investment I was happy to make because it allowed my business to grow.
When I began booking newborn sessions, I was setting everything up in my living room using all natural light. Then I was able to designate a room in my home as my studio space. It wasn’t long before I wanted something bigger. In 2014, my dream came true of having my very own studio space! Ask any photographer, it’s definitely a highlight. I was so thankful to have accomplished something so amazing! My studio is definitely my happy place! The location in Old Town Spring is perfect. I think the best way to describe the area is charming! Photography has taken me on some amazing journeys and placed me in the lives of some remarkable people, both in front and behind the camera. I can’t explain the feeling of gratitude I have from living this dream of being a photographer. I’m thankful everyday and can’t imagine doing anything else!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been moderately smooth. I think the biggest obstacle is yourself and having confidence in your work. I am my own worst critic, I always wonder what I could do better. I found that it helps to have a large amount of perspective in this industry and tough skin. There are millions of ways to take a picture; it’s YOU that makes it unique and one of a kind. For my own sanity, I made sure to stay true to my style and process and not be influenced or swayed by others around me. What works for some may not work for others, and that’s incredibly important to absorb and apply when you are branding yourself as an artist.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Deanna Addison Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Deanna Addison Photography is a maternity, newborn, children and family photographer. I also photograph seniors and boudoir, however, my specialty is newborns. I would say one of my biggest accomplishments was opening my studio in 2014. It’s located in Gentry Square in Old Town Spring. The location is perfect, the surrounding shops add to the overall charm and appeal. Over the years, I have accumulated a wide variety of vintage styled newborn props and baby accessories as well as maternity gowns and 6-9-month-sitter outfits for both girls and boys. It’s my goal for you to come to the studio and experience a stress-free enjoyablesession. I wanted my studio to have all the comforts of home so my clients can come and relax and enjoy their time.
I think my attention to detail sets me apart. I make sure all aspects from baby’s hair to fingers are in the right place before the shot is taken. One of my favorite things about newborn photography is the prep and set up. I love styling newborn sessions. I try to visualize the session in an album and the story it will tell. I make sure each image coordinates and flows with the rest. Nothing beats seeing a finished gallery come to life!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have my heart set on a few out of town newborn and family workshops I want to attend! I love meeting other photographers and learning in the process. There’s always room to grow and evolve in this industry! I can’t wait!
After the holidays I’m looking forward to Spring and Bluebonnet Minis, as well as gearing up for my 2019 newborns. I’m currentlybooking well into March and April for newborns. I always recommend booking when mom is in her 2nd trimester, and I love that so many families are planning ahead for the new year! It’s going to be an exciting year of watching all my 2018 babies turn 1 and capturing all new blessings in 2019. And of course, holiday minis will start booking in July! I’m so excited, 2019 is going to be incredible!
