Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Ngueket.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had no purpose of my own when it came to work after I graduated high school. The people I knew had professional plans and career aspirations for their future. For me, I had neither direction nor a clue of what I wanted to do upon graduating high school. So the day after high school, I joined the military. My first year of military service, I cried to my mother for a way out and complained to her of my failure to pass the shooting range due to my stigmatism. My boot camp was spent in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri during the hot, musty summer season. I loved the physical fitness but I dreaded the shooting range. Contact lenses were permitted for physical activities, so working out and group runs were a breeze. But the shooting range was something different. Contact lenses were not allowed on the range, so I had to wear these thick military glasses while out on the shooting range, – This was a stressful period for me. My shooting mates passed the shooting range with flying colors after two or three attempts. I went through the shooting range many, many times while trying to memorize the targets, with no success. After nearly fifty attempts, I was lucky enough to finally pass! Boot camp was supposed to last for three months. It took me a total of six months to complete the course! There is no telling whether I would’ve ever gotten out had I not passed that course!
After I departed the military, I signed up for the engineering program at a community college. I chose this particular program to follow in the footsteps of my stepfather’s career. My stepfather was smart, hardworking and respected among his community so I sought for the same qualities as my stepfather. I will be the first one to admit it as strange to follow in the footsteps of someone I’m not close to at all. But it was this admiration for his qualities that steered me in the direction of a much needed fresh start. I am, however, very close to my mother who has been there for me through good and bad.
At this point I started gaining a bit more clarity about my professional future. I was pretty clear that post graduation, I wanted a really good job with a really great company, paying a really good salary. So, I set personal expectations and standards academically which were to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA and of course, to graduate; as I knew a higher GPA would make me a more attractive candidate for the more credible companies, which would warrant a better salary! Turned out being in the engineering program threatened the possibility of achieving both. The first engineering course was a total failure. And after a couple more attempts and failed tests, I decided quickly to withdraw from the engineering program. After removing myself from the engineering program, I remember leaving the administration office, devastated and misplaced. And for a moment, I walked through campus feeling I had no real purpose, professionally anyway. I remember walking through the halls, feeling low on myself, and then falling upon the Accounting department. It was in this space that I was able to see for the first time, people who seemed to be like me. I immediately felt a since of belonging. I inquired about the Accounting Program, thinking, it couldn’t possibility be worse than the engineering program, and went forward from there.
I received my degree in Accounting and for the first 8 years of my career, I worked for many small and medium businesses in the accounting field. I learned a lot. After the first 8 years of working for a variety of companies and experiencing my new profession, I was in love with the practice and was convinced accounting was my purpose. This became even more apparent when I decided to work for myself, which was one of the best decisions I ever made professionally. Working for myself has given me the opportunity to work with companies in many sectors and visit many places in the world, which I would have never seen, had I been working for someone else. I have also had the opportunity to learn about many other professional roles, where I’ve had the pleasure to encounter and converse with these professionals on various subjects. But most importantly, after each year of business, working for myself has given me the opportunity to explore other avenues to generate income.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy road. I had no clue about life after my high school graduation. I thank my mom for her support and love for keeping me on track and helping me to become the person I am today. I struggled through boot camp trying to pass the shooting range for six months. After departing the military, I struggled to complete the engineering program so I switched my program to accounting. I will never regret switching programs in college, as this has proven to have had a positive effect in my life.
