Today we’d like to introduce you to Debora Levine.
Debora, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a girl who did her Dental School in Venezuela and for my internship I volunteered in the Venezuelan Amazons where I lived and helped the indigenous people with their dental needs. Lived in their huts, bathed in the rivers, and did mostly dental extractions for them due to limited availability to take all the equipment deep into the jungle, although in the main areas my group could work with compressors and fix their teeth. Later, after working in private practice for a couple of years, I decided to further my studies and come to the US and pursue a Masters degree in Endodontics. After several intents I was accepted into a fabulous graduate program.
During my graduate training program in Dallas at Baylor College of Dentistry, currently a Member of the Texas A&M University System, I was contacted by an endodontist in Houston (per one of his colleague’s recommendations) who offered me an associateship in his office when I completed my studies. Once I completed my certificate in endodontics and masters of Science I came to Houston to join him in his endodontic practice. The practice was very relaxed and catered to doing the best root canal treatments for patients where their comfort and care was of the upmost importance. Our relationship and practice grew until I bought the whole practice and then relocated to where we are now with state of the art equipment a beautiful office but most importantly the vision of providing the best possible care for our patients in the most comfortable way possible.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fortunately, it has been a very smooth road. My husband also wanted to work in Houston so the decision was easy. We had been dating for about 8 years until we completed our studies so after I graduated, we married and the following year had our first baby, Francesca, and then 2 years later, our boy Joshua. I was able to work through my whole pregnancies and my partner was always very supportive and helped for the 6 weeks following deliveries. He retired about a year ago but we keep close family relations and I have another endodontist with me now, Dr. Elie Ezzie, who’s also been a great asset to the practice.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, the practice is an endodontic practice where we specialize in root canal procedures and surgery of the roots and we are experts at it as it is all we do all day. We set ourselves apart by providing the utmost care for our patients and only doing the necessary treatments for their well-being integrating and getting them involved in the decision making of their treatment. We have eyewear they can watch a movie on during treatment, which is nice because it takes their mind of the procedure. We do different types of anxiety management depending on the patients’ needs, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation as well. We really try to provide the best possible treatment in the most comfortable way possible and we like our patients to have a state of the art experience minimizing their fears. We are highly trained in this and feel we deliver excellent quality care.
What were you like growing up?
I was a bit shy but always managed to have the best friends ever and was even popular in a quiet way. Always had people asking me out and interested in my friendship and I had very happy experiences growing up in a very healthy way. When younger always playing outside, then older fun excursions. Somehow I ended up studying dentistry even though my favorite subjects where math and physics. I was scientific minded with not much creativity but good with my hands. My dad also influenced in my decision of becoming a dentist as he would ask me what type of life I would like? Family? Hours? And it’s been a blessed profession for me as I really enjoy treating my patients and helping them with their pain.
