Meet Dena Wang of Dena Christine Photography & Floor Cloths By Dena in Friendswood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dena Wang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got my degree in photography at the University of Houston then continued with my master’s in photography at the College of Savannah Art and Design. I’ve worked in a studio and assisted local photographers with corporate portraits and magazine gigs. After I had my first daughter, I starting getting to know other families with young children in the area. I started doing more and more family photography. I have really found a passion for capturing the tender moments between parents and children! Owning my own business allows me to control my own schedule so I get plenty of time with my littles. It is the sweetest gig! I also enjoy painting murals and floor cloths as well. I have two energetic girlies, a wonderfully supportive hubby, and I get to make a living off my art. Life is good!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In a lot of ways, I don’t feel like I really came into my full self until I had children. Knowing those little girls needed to have the absolute best of me drove me forward through the anxiety and lack of self-esteem. Even after getting my degree, I was terrified! I was so afraid of failure and embarrassment. After some therapy, I came to the understanding that I will never arrive at the pinnacle and be just be happy all the time. Everything is always a process and I must value every incremental change. I have come a long way from just five years ago. I have grown in confidence and surrounded myself with some wonderful and loving people.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dena Christine Photography has really grown over the years. I mainly photograph families outdoors in natural light. The warm, glowy evening light is what I love. I do my best to evoke playful moments between siblings and parents and children. Genuine expressions and laughter is the goal! I photograph a lot of really young children and parents are always concerned about whether their child will cooperate, be cranky, or even smile at all! I have always gotten smiles from every kiddo I’ve photographed. I will play peek-a-boo with the babies and even show off my ninja moves for the little boys. And sometimes we just let them play, jump, run circles around mommy and daddy! I am really interested in capturing the child as they are. I also photograph newborns, wrapped up in their warm snuggly blankets, at home with their family. I also enjoy my seniors as well as engagement sessions.

Dena’s Floor Design began as a continuation of my involvement in local winter guard. I participated with my high school band, performed with an independent group for three years and did two years with Drum Corps International. Now I enjoy helping local groups, mostly high schools, with their tarp and prop design. Once we decide on the design, I come in and create a huge paint by number which the students then help me paint. Afterward, I add detail and any blending that’s needed. I also paint murals in homes and well as create hand painted floor cloths.

What were you like growing up?
My mother always encouraged me to draw, paint, and create. My parents gave me my first camera when I was 12, which I filled up mostly with pictures of my cat. I enjoyed singing and dance as well, even though I was very introverted and shy.
