Meet Denise Hulett of Restorative Fitness and Nutrition in Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Hulett.

Denise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been interested in food and nutrition. I love cooking and meal planning and like so many other women and men, I have tried every fad diet there is. Over a decade ago, for personal reasons, I became a vegetarian. I automatically thought my health would improve, but my blood pressure went up and so did my cholesterol AND my weight. My doctor wanted to put me on medicine, but I was resistant. Instead, I went to see a nutritionist and she helped me tweak my diet by adding in more whole foods and cutting down on sodium. By just a making a few adjustments to my diet, my blood pressure lowered, my cholesterol improved, and I lost weight. This made me really understand firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet. I decided I wanted to help others see the many advantages of good, nutritious food. In 2013, I enrolled in a master’s program for health and nutrition education. When I completed the program, I started Restorative Fitness and Nutrition, part of the Restorative Center in Sugar Land, Texas.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” I am a firm believer in this statement. Too often, medical professionals prescribe medicine before looking at a person’s lifestyle. My goal and my mission are to help clients live healthier lives through a better lifestyle that includes good nutrition and fitness. With even small changes to our diets and lifestyles, we can be healthier and decrease our chances of developing many of the prevalent diseases plagueing our communities today. It is my hope to continue to work with the Sugar Land and greater Houston community to help spread the word about the power of good nutrition. I also hope to pair with the medical professionals who understand the importance of complementary medicine, so we can use healthy food and lifestyle to enhance our community’s health and to decrease our dependence on prescription drugs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. I struggle with connecting with doctors and medical professionals who are like minded. Slowly, more and more medical professionals are understanding and seeing the research-based benefits of complementary medicine such as nutrition, but it isn’t always easy to connect. I have clients in all stages of different chronic diseases and a common thread amongst them is that their doctors never asked them about their current diets and lifestyles. This is such an important component of our health I have a hard time understanding why it isn’t a standard conversation for medical professionals. So many chronic diseases can be prevented, managed or even cured by good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

in addition, I compete with the Internet which has instant access to a plethora of nutrition trends and diets. There is so much information available online and while some if it is useful and helpful, some of it can be quite dangerous. I offer my clients my experience and education, along with research-based nutrition plans, accountability and support.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Restorative Fitness and Nutrition story. Tell us more about the business.
My mission is to help my clients learn to live and eat for premium health! I don’t offer fad diet plans or quick weight loss promises. Instead, I like to educate clients on the benefits of eating a whole food diet, rich in nutritious foods. I love to work with clients of all ages and families are always welcome. I specialize in nutrition education, weight loss, clean eating, nutrition for pre and post gastric surgery, gestational diabetes, chronic disease, pediatric nutrition, vegetarian/vegan diets, food allergies and healthy aging.

In addition to nutrition, I offer personal training and I pair with Feel Better with Yoga to offer yoga classes. All exercise programs are personalized for each of my client’s needs and goals. I have worked with clients who are very fit, and I have worked with clients who exercise from a chair. Any movement is better than nothing and I love to help clients of all ages and fitness level learn to get moving and to get stronger!

What sets me apart from other nutritionists and trainers is that I focus on each individual and their needs, meeting them where they are at and helping them to increase their nutrition and fitness in a healthy way. I have a master’s in health and nutrition education and I pass this experience and education to my clients. I am a certified personal trainer and certified fitness nutrition specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I am also a certified behavioral modification coach and weight loss specialist and continue to study with the Arizona Center for Integrative Health. I am in the process of completing my registered yoga teacher training with Yoga One RYT 200 teacher training in Houston. I love to continually expand my knowledge in both nutrition and fitness to help my clients be their healthiest selves!
