Meet Deseria Denell of Denell Entertainment in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deseria Denell.

Deseria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Houston, Texas and began studying performing arts at an early age. Music was my first love, although, often too shy to perform. There was an intense struggle with stage fright, however, I did ultimately overcome that challenge and participated in both school and church programs. Creative outlets for me included singing, writing, band, and theater.

After graduating from high school, I bypassed formal education and neglected my passions. This decision caused me to grow up rather quickly and led to many obstacles both professionally and personally. Nevertheless, it sparked the agony of not being able to enjoy what I did for a living and it caused me embrace creativity again. I attended classes at both Next Actor and Houston Community College to study Screenwriting, Acting, and Business. I have now learned the beauty of collaborating with other content creators. My new-found relationships have inspired me to bring together a unique innovative range of storytellers birthing Denell Entertainment.

Teamwork has led me to this point and I have made connections with great people along the way. Thomas R Carter, who has given me the opportunity to Direct my first feature film Surviving The Storm; this is a must see film with an amazing cast and crew. I am also working with Cry Out Media aka a voice for the voiceless, Neville Diony has brought me on board to Produce several projects for television and radio launching later this year. Having support makes a difference and I am quite blessed.

There are several strong men and woman who I am so grateful to have in my life; aunts, uncles, siblings, friends and cousins. My mothers (I have several), these are the women who inspired me to be fearless. My grandmother who raised me to have faith and always put God first. My boyfriend and his awesome family who have been so supportive of my dreams. Last but certainly not least the wonderful instructors, students and staff members at both Houston Community College and Next Actor. They have all been mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, and advocates for Deseria Denell.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Very interesting question, unfortunately it was not a smooth road, yet I am grateful for those obstacles. Coming from a large family and maintaining many friends over the years, I am blessed to have support. The “traditional” family upbringing was far from my norm; I faced childhood trauma and suffered with my mental and physical health as a result. A lot of those challenges carried over to my adulthood and led me to characterize my own standard in spite of the conditions I grew up in. Although not religious I am very spiritual; my relationship with God is the most important one of all… that is what got me through the tough times. Glancing through our own focal points, we will generally observe the world so that it makes sense to us. When you are a child, you ignore the emotional challenges adults convey until you become one. I was lucky enough to see the world through my very own focal point, and although often times reflect on the bumpy road traveled… I have made a choice to keep moving forward.

Please tell us about Denell Entertainment.
As an inspiring screenwriter only, I started taking classes and writing. Throughout the film program, I built relationships with others and begin working on student and company projects. I learned so much having the option to see an endeavor start off as an idea and become a reality. Rather a thirty-second project or one hundred and thirty minutes, being involved in the entire production process piqued my interest in becoming a Producer. In 2019, I am launching Denell Entertainment with the purpose of offering a unique staff with cumulative experience in providing programming for all forms of media. We pride ourselves on authenticity, originality, and efficiency; Houston has a community of talented and unconventional people who have so much to say.

As Producers, Directors, Writers, Cinematographers, Graphic Artists, Editors, Actors, Musicians, etc.; we are passionate to tell diverse stories for our diverse audience. One of my beliefs is if you make a choice in life good or bad… you must learn from it and grow. I created “Denell Entertainment” with the sole purpose of challenging myself and others that all stories matter. At Denell Entertainment everyone’s position is equally important and you can overcome anything with love, kindness and positive energy.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I firmly believe it is never too late to follow your dreams, although, I wish I had sooner. Time is something you will not get back even though the experiences I gained throughout life have rewarded me stories. The more failures, misfortunes, and mistakes I’ve personally had, the more I have to talk about. There are a few things I would have done differently such as believe in myself more and started this company sooner. The next challenge is learning to balance everything, I have made a conscious decision to live my life instead of dreaming it and that is the plan going forward.

I just worked with Deseria and the rest of the crew and talent on Surviving The Storm, and it was an incredible, wonderful experience! To get some of Deseria’s backstory makes it even more special. I am certain she will achieve her goals and her dreams.
Also, just want to give a short shoutout to Thomas Carter for having the foresight to give Deseria her directorial debut. Cool!
