Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Lakey.
Desiree, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for photography developed during undergraduate school. I had to take an art class as a requirement for my degree, so I decided to take photography. I bought a DSLR camera for the class and automatically became hooked. My professor taught us how to tell stories through photos. Each week our assignment was to develop a theme and take photos based on that theme. Then, we would print our pictures, display for the class and take turns critiquing each other’s work. After that class, I developed a passion for photography.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. After my class in undergrad, I didn’t have much time to act on my love for photography. Between classes and working my way through school, there just wasn’t enough time to slow down and actually enjoy photography. It wasn’t until my second year of graduate school, almost four years after my initial photography class, that I decided to actually get back into photography. Graduate school was tough and I realized that I needed something positive to escape and make me happy. That’s when I dusted off my Nikon and started shooting again. That happened in March of this year, so I’m still learning and growing as a photographer. It’s difficult to work your 9 to 5, only to come home and work some more on your passion projects. But that’s what it takes, and I’m determined to hone my skills and make my work purposeful – make people smile and make them think. As I learn more about myself and photography, my work becomes increasingly intentional.
Desiree Lakey Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Desiree Lakey Photography is my growing business that specializes in portrait photography. I am still growing as a photographer but, honestly, I’m really proud of how far I’ve come since I started. Every time I do a shoot, I just get better and better. I want customers to know that I’m committed to capturing their beautiful memories and providing quality customer service. I treat my customers the way I would want a photographer to treat me, that’s how you create lasting relationships.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, this interview. As a new photographer, I am incredibly grateful to be recognized as a local Houston business. Also, I’m working on a passion project right now that I won’t say much about. However, I am really excited about it and cannot wait to finish it!
