Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree McGee.
Hi Desiree, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Dr. Desiree McGee, DNP, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, and I am the owner and healthcare provider at Vivify Wellness, a Mobile IV Therapy and Wellness Concierge business. I have been a Registered Nurse for over 13 years and a Nurse Practitioner for almost 7 years. I have always wanted to be a Doctor/Nurse as far as I can remember! I knew God had placed this career in my heart because every time I thought I wanted to do something different outside of nursing, he always led me to a new and exciting learning experience within nursing.
My heart is in community health; that’s where I’ve always been drawn to as they are the population sometimes forgotten about due to low or no insurance. In my career as a Registered Nurse, I have worked in various hospitals and facilities doing Medical Surgical, Emergency Room, Forensics, and Infusion. I have also worked in Primary Care, Urgent Care, and Corrections as a Nurse Practitioner; these areas have allowed me to continue learning and growing as a healthcare provider.
I have always wanted to have my own business in healthcare; I wasn’t sure what my niche would be, but I knew it had to be something I was passionate about and where I could have autonomy. I always loved my days as an infusion nurse, they were calm and peaceful for the most part, and since I love being on the go, I decided my niche would be Mobile IV Therapy and Wellness Concierge Services.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business from scratch has been a journey!! You have to consider so many factors in starting a legit business and even more if it’s in healthcare. A lesson I learned was you have to get out of your own way! I can be indecisive on certain things, which caused me to be stagnant in some parts of the process. You have to make an informed decision and move on.
One of the challenges was doing this independently; it took a lot of research to ensure I followed the proper legal guidelines to make sure I would meet the healthcare standards. As a Nurse Practitioner in Texas, we cannot practice independently (yet); therefore, I had to find a physician to become my Medical Collaborator. Shoutout to my Doc for agreeing to collaborate with me!
Another challenge was making sure I did not get too excited and overspend, knowing I was funding this business independently, as I did not want to get loans or max out credit cards.
I took various classes to help key in on the business and specialized knowledge needed to start my business. It was definitely a period of late night and early mornings! When I had the pertinent things in place, I launched; because I knew I would never start if I kept waiting for everything to be perfect! Would I say starting this business was or is easy? NO, but it is well worth it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I started Vivify Wellness to be able to continue to help others with their healthcare needs. I wanted something that resonated with me and paid a little homage to my mom, Vivien.
The term VIVIFY means to endow with life or renewed life, and WELLNESS means the quality or state of good health, so the name Vivify Wellness was created.
Vivify Wellness is a Mobile Concierge Wellness Service, which means we come to the clients in the home, office, gym, etc., to provide healthcare services. Currently, we are only doing individual and group IV Vitamin Therapy, Fat Burners Injections, Vitamin Injections, Rapid Antigen COVID Testing, and Sports Physicals.
I hope to begin offering weight management and hormone therapy in the future. In addition, to Telemedicine (where the client calls/video in where we discuss client symptoms over a private HIPAA compliant connection) for convenient care for minor sick calls such as cold/flu, sinus, allergies, diarrhea, bronchitis, asthma, sore throat, UTI’s, respiratory illnesses, rashes, conjunctivitis, etc.
Most questions that I get are what is IV Vitamin Therapy, and what are Fat Burners?
IV Hydration Therapy and IV Vitamin Therapy delivers specially formulated blends of nutrients, vitamins, electrolytes, antioxidants, and sometimes even medications via an IV that can help replenish, restore and detoxify your body quicker than, say, drinking water or taking a medication orally.
Fat Burners (Lipotropics) injections are supplements used for fat loss. These are intended to complement other aspects of a weight loss regimen, including exercise and a low-calorie diet.
What matters most to you?
Helping others live their best healthy lives matters to me the most!
I am big on health and taking care of yourself. I believe if you take care of your body when you are young, your body will take care of you when you get older.
It is sad to see clients with disease processes that could have been prevented with lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and exercise. We have to take care of ourselves first, no matter what, and sometimes even before others that depend on us.
Always remember you cannot pour from an empty cup!
