Meet Diana Skellenger of Skelly Home Renovations in Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Skellenger.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Diana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Skelly Home Renovations started three years ago after I had worked with another construction company for a few years. We are a residential and commercial construction firm. We are very team oriented with our subcontractors, designers, architects, engineers and any other vendors or trades we are working with. Our goal is to unite all different trades and others involved to create as seamless a renovation as possible with a high level of transparent communication. We do this by utilizing project management software, having clients sign off on change orders, frequent on site meetings with clients, weekly internal team meetings- to name a few. Construction can be an emotional and challenging process, so we are constantly evaluating our processes and procedures to try and improve the experience for our clients, partners and sub-contractors. There are learning experiences and teachable moments every day in this business, so taking the time to evaluate those lessons is paramount.

Has it been a smooth road?
Each day can and usually does bring a new set of challenges. Construction is synonymous with surprises. It’s part of what makes the job interesting and exciting, but also can be frustrating, time consuming and tiring. We teach our team that when there is an issue or surprise on the job site the best way to present it to the client or us is with a solution or even better multiple solutions. Trying to predict issues is also a good course of action based upon when the house was built, but this is never a fool proof solution. Renovations projects are notorious for surprises. I cannot think of one job where we didn’t run into something unexpected. Because of this, it’s ultimately about the attitude which these are presented and how they are handled. It’s also helped us to have a positive team attitude overall, with encouraging and positive staff.

At this point, we have an amazing team and a really good set of subcontractors, but it was not always that way. All good things take time. Employee and subcontractor training can be very time consuming, but with the right person is completely worth it.

Please tell us about your business.
Skelly Home is known for a quality renovation with a positive attitude. Our team is resilient and that is what I am most proud of. A project manager can have a really bad day and they come to work the next day with a fresh outlook, this is pertinent in construction because every day is so important to each project as a whole. Another wonderful thing about construction is that no day is the same, the days move quickly and we’re never bored.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
AUSTIN: Austin supports small business owners well. Since starting the business, we have so many people cheering us on and sending us referrals. It’s truly amazing. Besides the business side of things, I love so many things about Austin. How unassuming many successful people are here, everyone here tends to be more relaxed, the fantastic restaurants, the green belts and of course the people. I love it here! I wish Austin had more international flights, that is the only con, and we are getting many more this year, so I’m getting my wish!
