Today we’d like to introduce you to Dincy Poulose
Hi Dincy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for Indian Bollywood dancing began during childhood from the Bollywood movies I grew up watching. I would eagerly watch and memorize the choreography while crafting my own at a young age. In college, I joined a competitive dance team and won multiple competitions across the country. This experience deepened my love for dance.
Throughout grad school and while working professionally as an elementary school teacher, I would choreograph for weddings and cultural events while always dreaming of starting my own dance company. After attending a cultural program in Spring of 2023, I noticed that children’s dance choreography lacked the effort seen in adult dance performances. Motivated to raise the bar, I founded Dil Se Dance Company, a Bollywood fusion dance company in June of 2023. Starting with a class of only 10 students, we have now grown to multiple classes for all levels and ages.
“Dil Se,” means “from the heart” in the Hindi language. We strongly believe that when you dance from the heart, it will show in your performance and touch the hearts of those that are watching.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I leaped into starting this new company, I simultaneously left education and joined the corporate world. The greatest challenge has been balancing the demands of a high-pressure profession while building a business from the ground up. It is definitely stressful and exhausting however, in my eyes it is worth it. They say that when you do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all—and I couldn’t agree more.
We’ve been impressed with Dil Se Dance Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dil Se Dance Company specializes in teaching Indian Bollywood Fusion Dance to children and adults. Bollywood dance is a theatrical and dynamic style of dance that is famously featured in Indian films. We also incorporate fusion dance which includes various dance styles seen across India such as bhangra and semi-classical. What sets Dil Se apart is our mission to provide high-quality choreography while fostering a love for dance in children. We focus on attention to detail, quality dance steps, synchronization, and energetic performances all while ensuring that students are growing in their skills and having fun. What also sets us apart is my background as a teacher which allows me to set high expectations for my students and encourage them to reach their potential while creating a nurturing environment for them to expand their skills.
What makes you happy?
Dancing and teaching students have always been passions of mine. Owning a company that allows me to blend both my passions is truly a dream come true. Just as a teacher finds fulfillment in her student’s academic growth, I find immense happiness in watching my students develop their skills and grow as dancers. Their growth not only fills me with pride, but also builds their confidence.
