Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionnedra Bartley.
Dionnedra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger, I used to go to my grandmother’s house to help sort her medicine in her pill box and do her hair. It wasn’t until I would grease her scalp that I have seen how it affected her. Meaning, “it would make her feel good, it would put her to sleep.” I would say to her, “Mama, how do you feel?” She would always tell me, “It felt good, thank you” and smile. In those moments at those times, it made me feel great knowing that I helped my grandmother get to that feeling of “good.” That’s where my eagerness for assisting individuals started to develop. I was always looking for ways to help and make people feel good.
I desired to be a participant in delivering quality health care to all, so I started my healthcare career in 2007 in high school as a nursing assistant in Morgan City, La. I had some upbringing in a lower social, economical area where there were disparities in healthcare being received by individuals and family members. I was a recipient of government healthcare assistance (help). I was one of the many individuals that even with government assistance, survival was hard, and it wasn’t enough even working 40+hrs/week. I had to strive and make a difference in the community because of the “help” was there to assist me, yet it wasn’t enough; then people like me were still at a disadvantage. I found myself with questioning my life and circumstances. I quickly realized I had to help me. I had to do the work. I had to further my education so I can be of help to myself and young women and people like me. I went to nursing school and received a certificate for a Licensed Vocational Nurse, followed by my Associates in Nursing. Then a bachelor’s in nursing, I couldn’t stop there. I had to keep going.
After relocating from Louisiana to Texas, three children, an intermediate strong support system, and some years later, I finally graduated with my master’s in nursing from Walden University. I am now a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner.
Healthcare is my passion. I am the Co-founder/Co-owner of Serenity Health and Wellness, a medical clinic. Being a Family Nurse Practitioner and a entrepreneur gives me the platform to provide quality affordable caring for others. I’ve always wanted to make a difference to others in my everyday life. I’m now in the position to help “those people” like my younger self.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. I had some struggles. I was young with three kids, working 40+hours/week, and trying to finish school. Daycare monies were out of pocket because the government told me I made to much to receive assistance. Daycare’s aren’t cheap. Couldn’t count on family members to help with my kids all the time. When my kids were sick, I had to stay home so I couldn’t work. If I didn’t work, I wasn’t making any money. Bills were not getting paid. Yes, I had struggles. These struggles are everyday struggles for young mothers like myself. Nothing was given to me. I had to earn everything!
