Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Berry.
Doug, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have lived in the Houston area all my life. From an early age, photography has been a part of my life. From my early childhood, to life as an adult, I noticed that I viewed life as a series of vignettes. As I photographer, I love capturing those moments in time with my camera.
I don’t know how to paint and most likely, well never be a painter. I am creative and my work is very similar to paintings. When it comes to photography, I tend to shoot with a more creative point of view. I love portraits and dance photography and have been blessed to work with some professional dancers all across the US. When I am photographing dancers, my goal is to capture the motion and artistry of the dancers with my photographs. When it comes to portraits, I want to create a piece of art that would become a masterpiece, treasured for generations.
I have found that portraiture and dance have become my muse and passion. I love creating those vignette moments, capturing them with my camera, resulting in an image that is truly a one of a kind. However, I also do maternity, themed photo sessions, corporate events, head shots and landscape.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is has many potholes… and I have certainly hit my share of potholes while traveling on my journey. Early on in my career, I wanted to take beautiful pictures, but honestly, I wasn’t very good. Having the skills to take good quality photos and deliver consistently was a huge challenge. Alongside that was have confidence in my ability and artistic eye.
For me, having patience to allow the growth was another struggle.
Hot Shu Foto – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are blessed to live in an area that has many excellent photographers. I am excited to be able to photograph people! In our area, there are so many choices in photographers, so, I chose to specialize in three main areas, portraits, dance and corporate events. What sets me apart is my artistry. I treat each photo as a piece of art, knowing that my clients will treasure the image of a moment of time that will never be repeated.
To me, customer service is paramount. Each customer is valuable and brings such a wonderful story. The story is special to me… it’s is a picture, however, that picture will last a lifetime and bring a flood of emotion and memories every time it is viewed.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment – wow, that is difficult for me to pick just one! There are so many great moments that have touched my heart.
To be honest, I have been published, photographed other photographers, worked with some awesome people. One of the proudest moments is photographing a medical doctor who worked with cancer patients. Our session consisted of fashion and some soft romantic images. Shortly after our session, she found out she herself had cancer and went through all the treatment. To be able to have provided her some images of her prior to cancer gave inspiration to press through and not give up! Today, she is cancer free – such a beautiful soul inside and out. That session reminded me that what I do is more that photos – it truly is capturing emotions and moments.
