Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ashley Cornelius D.C.
Dr. Cornelius, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have lived in Richmond over two years and have been in the Houston area for over 10. I was born and raised in El Paso Texas. I received my undergrad from the University of Texas at Austin and my doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in 2012. I practiced as an associate doctor for other practices until last year. My main focus since graduating school has been in the care of pregnant moms and children but also have an extensive background in sports and various soft tissue therapies. In 2018, I had just had my second child and realized I needed something different for myself and for my family, so I decided to start my own practice. My goal was to be with my children more but also be able to help other families like my own and be able to provide the chiropractic care they needed while also making it accessible for busy families. Budget was also a factor, so I decided one of the best ways to do this would be through house calls.
I started in August of 2018 and catered to families that had difficulty getting to an office, had just had a new baby, or were in too much pain to drive. There turned out to be such a need for this unique service in my area so my practice quickly began to grow. I focused on reaching local moms and meeting birth professionals in my area to let them know who I was and how I could help. In January of 2019 many of my patients were also interested in the option of coming to see me, so I began seeing patients out of my home office. This worked well but I then decided to move to a new office located in Richmond, TX so I could have more space yet also have that homey feel. It is the perfect little place tucked back in the trees where I can serve my families in comfort and peace. I continue to offer house calls as well and love the unique practice that I have built and am blessed to have been given the chance to make it thrive.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a one woman show who has never owned a business made for a quick learning curve. I have always been detail-oriented and punctual but juggling multiple roles in my business as well as organizing and timing a house call and office practice schedule plus my own family schedule has created a lot stress in learning ways to become better at time management. Committing to creating the time for things that have to get done has become a top priority that I continue to struggle to stay on top of.
I chose to begin a practice as an out of network practitioner which has been a challenge at times when patients would prefer to use their insurance. However, I am happy in my choice as it ultimately gives me and my patients more freedom in determining what care they actually need rather than letting their insurance company dictate it the parameters of their health.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cornelius Chiropractic – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is Cornelius Chiropractic. I am the owner and chiropractor serving patients of all kinds but have a prenatal, postpartum and pediatric focus. I am Webster Certified which gives me additional expertise in the care of pregnant women. Nearly all of my post-graduate education has been in the care of pregnant women and children. I continue to work towards further certifications in those specialties. My practice is 90% women and children but I am happy to treat dad’s and people of nearly all ages! I help mostly families that are in a similar stage of life as me and strive to educate and empower my patients to live their healthiest life through the power of chiropractic care. I started my business as a 100% mobile house call practice. It then grew into a hybrid practice of office visits and house calls which as of now is around a 50/50 split. I feel proud of the uniqueness in that my practice offers the best of both worlds. My patients love being treated in their homes as well as the home like feel of my office. I love that I have created a business that serves my family as well as others and am so happy I got the courage to make the leap and go for it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that the mentality “It takes a village” is more alive than ever in this city. The times of not knowing your neighbors or not caring about each other or looking out for one another is headed out. I know my generation has struggled with this, but with what our city has had to go through that past couple of years…multiple times with the storms I think has solidified the importance of community. I especially feel that with the moms of this city. We are craving the connections and there are so many organizations now that are meant to surround women with friendships, support, resources and guidance as we all work together to grow our families in communities rich in diversity who put love above everything else. Judgey moms beware, Houston doesn’t play like that!
I think this will be a common answer…the traffic. It’s even more relevant for a business like mine that relies on being able to get from location to location in a timely fashion! I am pleased to hear that they will be expanding the roads on the Grand Parkway, can’t wait!
As good as the food is here, the abundance of tex-mex and lack of authentic Mexican food can be hard for someone who grew up in El Paso. There are more options once you enter the loop, but its slim pickings out here in the burbs. If you have any recommendations, please send them my way!
