Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Charlene Lawson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a love affair with fashion but also excelled in math and science. As a single mom, I had to take a more traditional route and chose to get my degree in Chemistry instead of moving to New York to pursue my fashion dreams. After earning my doctorate in Chemistry from Howard University, I moved to Houston and started a career in the oil and gas industry. While in corporate America, I met so many intelligent, accomplished, and ambitious women who were killing it in the workplace but struggling with their professional image.
As a fashion lover, colleagues naturally gravitated to me for style tips and to accompany them on shopping trips. It was during this time that a light bulb came on and I realized that there was a need for personal styling, that I absolutely loved empowering women to look and feel good, and most importantly I felt like I was doing exactly what God created me to do.
After 4 years in corporate, I was no longer fulfilled and getting burned out. I knew it was time for a change. So, I decided to step out on faith and finally pursue my passion for fashion. I earned a certification in personal styling and launched my company, Style Chemistry Consulting, in 2017. As a professional woman myself, I had an instant connection to other professional women. After a magazine feature and news segment, my business took off! To date, I’ve been recognized as a “Houston Top Woman in Business” and had the pleasure of styling hundreds of women around the globe.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think my journey has been a lot smoother than most new entrepreneurs because I invested in myself and my business upfront by hiring a business coach, brand strategist, and web/logo designer. When I launched, many people assumed I had been in business for years solely based on my branding. This helped to build instant trust with potential clients. But the road has not always been easy. In the beginning, business was up and down and sometimes it felt like I was invisible. I quickly learned that as a service-based business with no brick and mortar, it’s absolutely imperative to keep your business in the forefront of people’s minds. That meant posting on social media daily even if no one interacted with my posts, weekly networking with target clients, and building up my portfolio with strategic complimentary styling and speaking events in exchange for promo and email lists. Consistency has been the key to overcoming my struggles.
