Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Hilary Granson.
Hi Dr. Granson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for animals. I started down another career path, however, being a little intimidated by the hard sciences. However, after working in advertising and marketing for about a decade, I realized I wasn’t fulfilled and wanted to do something more meaningful. So, I went back to school and overcame my fear of the sciences and found that not only did I enjoy them, but I was good at it. The rest is history!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always hurdles one has to overcome. For me, it was realizing that not everyone shared my passion and commitment to veterinary medicine. As many corporate players have moved into the veterinary field and own a good majority of practices, I realized the field was and is becoming more about the revenue and less about the care given to each pet patient and client education. Additionally, being a gender non-conforming gay woman sometimes made finding progressive work environments challenging. I decided I wanted to work in a practice that put prioritized patient care and diversity. As a result, Urban Animal Veterinary Hospital was born!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Urban Animal Veterinary Hospital?
Urban Animal VH is a modern, full-service veterinary practice centrally located in the Houston Heights. We care about the patients we see and strive to educate their pet parents so they can offer the very best to their four-legged (in some cases three-legged) friends. Our staff is diverse are were selected for the skills in working with pets and their people.
Our appointments are 30 minutes to ensure no one is rushed, and we can appropriately address concerns as well as go slowly with each patient, providing a fear-free experience. We have canine and feline appeasing pheromones in our separate dog and cat rooms to help patients relax. Additionally, we offer gentle handling and treats during visits to let our patients know we are allies. As a results, many pets come in excited to see us!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor in this field can be challenging. For folks looking to become involved with veterinary medicine, look up practices online to find a culture that you think will fit with your goals. Visit and see if they will let you shadow as a volunteer.
