Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jacquelyn Strait.
Dr. Jacquelyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a proud native Houstonian! I was born and raised on Houston’s east end. Despite moving away from the Houston area several times in my life, I always find my way back home. I love Houston for its vitality and strength. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
I am a licensed psychologist by trade. I have been in the mental health field for over 16 years. My introduction to the field of psychology came after I graduated from college and began working as a cognitive therapist for a brain injury rehabilitation facility. Working with individuals who had sustained traumatic brain injuries, defied the odds, and fought their way back from the brink of death was an honor. I knew then that I wanted to return to school and continue in the counseling field.
I graduated with a Ph.D. in psychology in 2010, I worked at a group therapy practice as a licensed psychologist for over five years. In July 2017, I opened my private practice – Winding Way Therapy – in Friendswood, Texas. We are a full-service counseling practice serving children, adolescents, and adults. We love working with our clients!
In addition to private practice, I am thrilled to offer online consulting services to Women of Color who are ready to incorporate health and wellness into their daily lives. Not only have I witnessed the impact of chronic illness (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease) on women in my life, I have also struggled with my own wellness in years past. I am excited to help other Women of Color get on the wellness track.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been a number of obstacles along the way. About two months after starting a private practice, Hurricane Harvey devastated the area. It was heartbreaking to see friends, family members, clients, fellow Houstonians impacted by the storm. But, I also was inspired by the outpouring of support from people in the area when it was time to rebuild. Just another reason why I love this city.
It is also very difficult to learn how to build a business as a psychologist. Graduate school does not teach you how to be a business owner! From marketing and advertising to networking and billing, there is a huge learning curve being an entrepreneur. Yes, there were struggles, failures, and roadblocks. Despite these difficulties, I believe in leaning into fear of failure, embracing the lesson to be learned, and moving ahead.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fit For a Queen Wellness Consulting and Winding Way Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
Fit for A Queen Wellness Consulting is an online consulting program focused on helping Women of Color dispel myths that surround diet, exercise, and overall wellness – myths that keep women chained to poor health choices, chronic disease, a decreased quality of life, and inactivity.
We know that there are some illnesses that disproportionately impact Women of Color, and I want to do what I can to help reduce that gap. I absolutely love helping women identify their mental blocks that keep them from a life of health, vitality, and longevity. In addition to my consulting services, I also am a co-founder of Winding Way Therapy.
We provide counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults for conditions including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, among other issues. It is an honor to work with people who trust in the process of therapy and learn how to transform their lives, build better self-confidence, and discover their strength.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
For both businesses, I see more people starting to prioritize their health and wellness. We are starting to take a more active role in our lives, and instead of allowing life to happen to us, we are motivated to live up to our full potential.
The types of services offered by Fit For a Queen Wellness Consulting is unlike any other program offered. It’s easy to find a personal trainer or someone to help you with a nutrition plan. Our consulting program starts with changing a person’s mindset about the importance of wellness…. not only when you want to fit into a swimsuit for vacation, but as a lifestyle choice. I believe that mindset coaching for health and wellness will trend upward over the next 5-10 years.
Therapy services are already trending upward. What’s great about this trend is that counselors and psychologists are learning how to incorporate telehealth services into their practices, which provides people who otherwise would not have access to counseling services an opportunity to get them. It’s quite amazing!
