Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jasmine Boone.
Hi Dr. Jasmine , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
honestly, I think counseling found me before I found it.
Even as early as middle school, my friends would tell me their deepest, darkest secrets without me ever asking. At the time, I didn’t have the language for it, but looking back now, I realize they were sharing the trauma and painful experiences they were living through. I would go home and tell my mom about the things my friends were carrying, and one day she said, “You should be a psychologist.” I remember asking her what a psychologist did, and after she explained it the best she could, something clicked. That conversation planted a seed that never really stopped growing.
I tried to fight it a few times. But every time I explored another path, counseling kept calling me back.
I went on to obtain my master’s in Clinical Psychology and my Doctorate in Counselor Education. From there, I opened my private practice, and I haven’t looked back.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, the dissertation process is absolute hell, but that’s a given. Honestly, my professional journey has been pretty smooth. I had one adversary when I was first getting started, they wanted to use their power to keep me from parting from them as an employee and doing my own thing. Unbeknownst to them I was an ethics professor at the time and was very clear that their treatment towards me was extremely unethical. Needless to say and I came out victorious. I will say if i weren’t astute in that situation I definitely would not be a licensed practitioner today. That was a very rough time.
Other than that, ironically, my biggest struggle wasn’t within counseling, it was trying to convince myself I was supposed to do something else. Every time I explored a different professional path, it was like God wasn’t having it. 😂 I got the message loud and clear, and things have honestly been pretty amazing ever since. I’ve been blessed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’ve been in private practice for about seven years, and I primarily work with adults. My specialty is trauma, and I’m EMDR-trained, so I help clients process and heal from experiences that continue to affect how they see themselves and the world around them.
One thing I’m really passionate about is helping people, especially those in marginalized communities, understand what trauma actually is. So many people think trauma only refers to the “big” events, but trauma can be any painful experience that changes the way you move through the world. Helping people recognize that is often the first step toward healing, and it’s one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
Another area I’m passionate about is helping people navigate singlehood. We talk a lot about marriage and relationships, and while I absolutely work with couples, I don’t think we spend enough time talking about how to thrive while you’re single. Singlehood isn’t just a waiting room for marriage, it’s an opportunity to grow, heal, and build a life you genuinely love. I enjoy helping people make the most of that season.
Beyond my private practice, I also enjoy speaking and educating on mental health. I’ve had the honor of serving as a keynote speaker for organizations like PepsiCo, Phillips 66, and the U.S. Department of Defense. I also serve as psychological strategist where I help organizations and media companies optimize human performance and create psychologically safe environment. Being able to bring conversations about mental health, trauma, and emotional wellness to larger audiences is something I’m incredibly proud of because it allows me to make an impact beyond the therapy room.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say summertime with my cousins. On my mom’s side, we’d all go to my grandma’s house in Mississippi. There were so many of us running around, and we’d put on these elaborate talent shows on her tiny little porch that felt so big back then. We took those performances so seriously, the dance routines, the Whitney Houston songs, we thought we were putting on a real production!
On my dad’s side, we’d spend summers in Chicago. Coming from Houston, I thought having a basement was the coolest thing ever because we didn’t have them. All the kids would disappear downstairs while the adults stayed upstairs enjoying themselves. Most of my cousins on that side were boys, so there was plenty of WWE wrestling, pretending we were professional wrestlers, and just having the best time.
When I think about my favorite childhood memories, they all come back to family. Those summers with my cousins are some of the happiest memories I have.
