Today we’d like to introduce you to DrJoyce Jackson.
Hi DrJoyce, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path to becoming a physician did not follow the traditional timeline. In fact, I made the life-changing decision to pursue medicine at 38 years old. At the time, many advisors questioned whether starting medical school later in life was realistic. Some even suggested that the road would simply be too long and too difficult. But I never doubted the calling on my life. I believed deeply that I was meant to become a physician, and I was determined to see it through.
During that same period of my life, I was also caring for my terminally ill husband while raising two young boys. Balancing those responsibilities while returning to school required tremendous focus, discipline, and perseverance. Those experiences shaped who I am today and reinforced a mindset that continues to guide me: perseverance, determination, and a never-give-up attitude. I believed I could succeed even when others questioned the path, and that belief carried me forward.
Those years shaped the mindset that guides me today: perseverance, determination, and a never-give-up attitude. I believed I could succeed even when the odds seemed stacked against me. That belief carried me through medical training and continues to guide my work as a physician and entrepreneur.
Today, I am the founder and Chief Medical Officer of Recharge MedSpa & Wellness Clinic in Spring, Texas, a physician-led practice built around what I call the three pillars of Recharge.
The first pillar is accessible medical care through the Direct Primary Care model. Direct Primary Care restores the personal relationship between physician and patient. Through a membership starting at $99 per month, no copay, patients have direct access to their doctor, longer appointments, and transparent pricing. Because we remove many of the traditional insurance barriers, we are also able to offer low-cost laboratory testing, affordable imaging, and discounted medications, helping make quality healthcare more accessible.
The second pillar is preventive and wellness medicine, helping patients optimize their health, improve energy, hormone optimization, weight loss and focus on longevity rather than simply treating disease after it occurs.
The third pillar is medical aesthetics and rejuvenation, helping patients look and feel their best while improving skin health and confidence.
Together, these pillars create a comprehensive approach where patients can care for their health inside and out in a supportive, physician-guided environment.
Looking back, the journey to where I am today has been defined by perseverance and belief. I knew that if I remained committed to the vision and kept moving forward, the path would unfold. My story is proof that when you believe in your purpose and refuse to give up, you can achieve extraordinary things—even when the odds appear to be against you.
Today, my mission is to use that experience to help others—by making healthcare more accessible, empowering patients with knowledge, and creating a place where people can truly recharge their health and their lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not.
The first challenge was simply going back to school. I had to return to complete all of the required science, calculus and statistics prerequisites, while also preparing for medical school applications, volunteering, and caring for my family. Almost every moment of my day was scheduled and planned. There was very little room for wasted time.
Preparing for the MCAT was one of the most challenging academic experiences I had ever faced. It required months of intense studying, and I was doing that in the middle of everything else life demanded.
At the same time, I was volunteering at Healthcare for the Homeless in downtown Houston, working odd jobs when I could, and trying to maintain as normal a home environment as possible for my two boys. In the midst of all of this, I was also caring for my husband who was battling a terminal illness. His medical appointments, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments were all part of the daily rhythm of our lives.
There was a great deal of personal sacrifice involved in pursuing medicine during that season of my life. But looking back, it was absolutely worth it.
During that time, I started a blog called A40YearOldMedicalStudent.blogspot.com where I documented my experiences, challenges, and lessons along the way. That blog is still active today, and I’m grateful that it has helped encourage other people who may be considering returning to school later in life to pursue their dreams.
That season taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of believing in yourself even when the path is difficult. Those lessons continue to shape how I approach medicine, business, and life today.
My husband never had the opportunity to see me get accepted into medical school. He succumbed to his illness before I received that long-awaited call. While he wasn’t physically there to celebrate that milestone, I carry his strength and encouragement with me every day. In many ways, that acceptance was not just mine—it was ours,
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Recharge MedSpa & Wellness Clinic was created from my desire to bring together several aspects of healthcare that are often separated—primary care, preventive medicine, wellness optimization, and medical aesthetics—into one physician-led environment. Our clinic is located in Spring, Texas, and our mission is to help people improve their health, confidence, and quality of life through personalized care.
One of the core components of our practice is the Direct Primary Care model, which allows patients to have a direct relationship with their physician without the barriers of traditional insurance systems. Patients can join through a membership starting at $99 per month, which provides them with direct access to their doctor, longer visits, and more time to focus on prevention and education. Because we are not dependent on traditional insurance billing, we are also able to offer low-cost lab testing, discounted medications, and affordable imaging, which helps make healthcare more accessible and transparent.
In addition to primary care, we provide services that support overall wellness and confidence. These include hormone optimization, medical weight management, regenerative therapies, and physician-guided aesthetic treatments such as neuromodulators, microneedling, and skin rejuvenation. My goal has always been to approach health from both the inside and the outside—helping patients improve how they feel physically while also supporting their confidence and well-being.
What sets our clinic apart is that we are physician-led and relationship-driven. I take time to listen to my patients, understand their goals, and create individualized plans that support their long-term health. The practice was intentionally designed around what I call the three pillars of Recharge: accessible medical care, preventive wellness, and rejuvenation.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that Recharge reflects a philosophy I deeply believe in—that healthcare should be personal, accessible, and empowering. Our tagline, “Where wellness meets luxury and science meets serenity,” represents the idea that people deserve a healthcare environment that feels supportive, thoughtful, and focused on helping them live their healthiest lives.
Ultimately, what I want readers to know is that Recharge MedSpa & Wellness Clinic is not just about treatments or services. It’s about creating a place where people feel heard, supported, and equipped with the tools they need to take control of their health and truly recharge their lives.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the most important qualities behind my success are perseverance, character, and integrity.
Perseverance keeps you moving forward when things become difficult. Every meaningful goal requires staying committed long after the excitement of the idea has passed. Success often comes from simply refusing to quit.
Character and integrity are equally important. They shape how you treat people, how you make decisions, and how you lead. In healthcare especially, trust is everything. Patients are placing their health, their concerns, and often their fears in your hands. Maintaining honesty, transparency, and compassion in those relationships is essential.
For me, success has never been defined only by professional achievements. It’s about building something meaningful, treating people well, and staying true to your values along the way. Those principles guide how I practice medicine, how I run my business, and how I approach life.
