Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwain Thomas.
Dwain, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began learning how to do hair by helping my fiancé & mother add tracks here & there to increase volume and or length. It was maybe a year or two later when I actually started to take interest in perfecting the craft, soon after we were informed we would be expecting our 1st born. My fiancé & I then decided it was what I should probably pursue. One of the best decisions I ever made, through prayer & dedication it took little to no time for me to get a name for myself in the Houston hair industry. I made one post (collage) on my personal page showing everybody pics of work I had been keeping a secret & told everyone to follow my new business page (Weezydidit) & thankfully it’s been up ever since! It’ll make six years this year that I’ve started this amazing journey as a Professional – full-time hairstylist. It’s been a rollercoaster but all the hard work, sacrifices & commitment I put in & still to this day put in makes it all worth it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely had some bumps in the road but what’s a successful journey without then! My first was balancing work with family time. When I decided to go forward with hair, I quit my job & enrolled in school with maybe $300 to my name, granted I was living at home with my mom but I had responsibilities & a baby on the way so there left no time for anything other than HUSTLE. I would go to school from 8a-5p, mon-sat, come home do 1-2 clients, wake up repeat! That went on for a little under a year. After I graduated, I then was able to take more clients but $75per client isn’t much when you have a family to provide for, so I would work from sunrise to sunset EVERYDAY just so that we had everything we needed. Thankfully I was a year or less in my career and was able to be booked up & could depend on just my income alone. Fast forward to now God has made it to where I work only three days & I’m able to give my family & self four days to enjoy, relax & regroup.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Weezydidit story. Tell us more about the business.
My brand is Weezydidit, I’m a hairstylist. I specialize in Extensions & natural hair. Most know me for how natural I’m able to make extensions look! The one thing that makes me proud is my talent never goes unnoticed & the work I put in really shows & is always appreciate rather it be the actual client reaction or someone commenting on a post of mine! Because I put so much love into EVERY client, I do & not just that, I make the overall experience grand, so a little love/acknowledgment is sometimes all I need!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I try not to use the word luck, only because I’m really big on faith & I believe God makes no mistakes & that everything is strategically aligned. So no matter if it’s for my good or not, it’s supposed to happen however it does!
