Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Ellery Anderson
Hi Dylan Ellery, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since February, when I did my other Voyage interview, my life has changed so much, as I have changed so much! I previously talked about my life as an artist and how I got to where I was in my creative practice, as I was just starting to emerge into my entrepreneurial spirit that has become more activated within me. Throughout my life, I have always felt like I was on my own unique and different path, and I find that my life flows better when I accept that about myself. Embracing differences and changes in yourself and others always takes a certain amount of grace and patience. During my undergraduate BFA program, I started to realize that to be an artist is to inherently be an entrepreneur, where you both produce the goods, market and sell the goods you’re creating, and since then I have been learning all I can about entrepreneurship, business and finance in any and every way I can.
I have always been a creative person, starting with writing practices and photography as young as early elementary school. I have always been doing my best to be of assistance and serve the manifestation of my ideas and others ideas, goals and dreams however I could. Using my own abilities and skills to turn ideas into tangible things both in my creative practice, but also with others businesses, art, and personal endeavors, through freelance creative facilitation, art consulting, social media management, digital asset creation, tarot reading, modeling and more.
I have been working at the Pablo Cardoza Gallery in Houston, Texas for 2 years now, assisting the owner, Pablo, with anything and everything he needs to run the gallery, such as, creation of press releases and price lists, social media materials, website management, artwork inventory, packaging and installation, client and artist relations and more. It is a true joy to work with Pablo on maintaining this dream and community he has built with his gallery, especially while he attends graduate school, and to be of assistance in the creative industry as a whole in Houston.
In spring of this year, after previously attending over fifteen markets as a vendor, I wanted to create a mutually beneficial situation for one of my favorite venues in Houston, as well as serve my fellow artist and vendor friends, by hosting my own market at The Flat, for their new coffee shop Sunny Coffee. I hosted six markets over weekends in the spring and early summer hosting vendors and promoting the new coffee shop at The Flat during the daytime, which was really flexing this new entrepreneurial muscle I’m building. It was such a great experience to work with Andre, the owner, and all of the vendors and friends, being able to bring together a community of people and to generate more engagement, community and sales for everyone involved.
In the process of attending my undergraduate BFA Sculpture program, I developed an idea for a business to better serve the creative communities needs in Houston, and to help fulfill that dream, I have returned to school at the University of Houston, in the Master of Arts Leadership program, while taking classes at Bauer School of Business for finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing to round out my skill set and to assist in the development and eventual launch of the business, which I’m very excited about!
I have always been someone with a variety of interests, and never wanting to just do one thing, so in the process of my work, my freelance work, business, and art, I love reading tarot both privately and at events and markets, as well as modeling. I have been modeling for about 10 years casually and it is such a joy to be able to work with fashion and photography, two passions of mine in my personal life as well as to help other creatives visions come to life. I am currently open for all kinds of work; social media, graphic design, art consulting and placement, tarot reading, art, and modeling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In my previous interview, I talked about some of the judgements I’ve faced for studying art, and that still holds true today, even though I know that that is personal to the person judging and not me. I have been in the process of overcoming any obstacles in studying art and shifting to a more business-entrepreneurial focus in my life, not for any reason other than this is where I feel called to be, and that this is where I feel I can best be of service. I have a wide well-rounded skillset of both digital/physical 2d/3d design as well as so many skills with client relations, administration, sales, event planning, social media management, and more, and I know I can be of service and make ideas come to life with how many times I’ve done it in the past. Working on set pieces for huge theatrical performances with over 100 artists, assisting in music video shoots, working at an art gallery, hosting markets, all while doing freelance work with design, art placement and more, has both been a joy for myself to be creative and a service to others in fulfilling and manifesting their visions. I hope to not be defined by others judgements, and to be able to showcase and utilize how I can help other people bring their ideas and dreams to life, to help others, to be of service, to bring more joy and creativity into the world, and to act from love. And I hope those who are judging, aren’t judging themselves too hard either.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
With my work, I have been currently assisting and managing the logistics and operations at the Pablo Cardoza Gallery, with the owner Pablo Cardoza. I manage all the production of digital assets and social media materials throughout the exhibition process for each exhibition, including show posters, press releases, price lists, writing artist biographies and show descriptions, website management, as well as managing the logistics of the gallery such as managing inventory, packaging of work, installation and deinstallation, in addition to artist and client relations. I manage social media promotion of the show and the exhibition after the opening to increase engagement and build on the amazing community Pablo has fostered over his twelve year tenure as a gallerist, curator and business owner.
When I’m not helping Pablo, I’m doing freelance graphic design work such as producing graphics for social media, creating content with photos and video, and website management for individuals and companies looking to increase their communities and engagement. This is supported by my three years of study graphic design, my long-time love of print and digital publications, and my own personal love of social media. I am also working on freelance art consulting and placement of artwork outside of the gallery, helping artists with developing and getting placed in shows, event programming and management, as well as assisting artists with developing their commercial practice outside of galleries such as getting prints and postcards placed in stores and markets.
I have other projects I work on such as reading tarot at markets, private events and doing individual private readings. Reading tarot brings me such joy to connect with people, and to help people connect with themselves. I read tarot with the intention of helping people connect to their joys, desires, dreams and goals and to help find ways to bring those into the present moment. Reading tarot has fostered such connection within myself and with a growing community of like-minded people who are eager to live from love, joy, abundance and live in alignment with themselves.
I also enjoy modeling both for fun and as a part of my creative values to help people manifest their creatives ideas, which is an underlying foundation and value of my life and work experience. I am really proud of my ability to go above and beyond with the work I produce and being able to assist people in bringing their ideas to life as closely as we can to their original dream, while making room for magic new ideas and flowing with the unexpected. I think this perspective also sets me apart from others, approaching everything with a creative solution-oriented mindset, knowing that if there is a problem, then there is at least one solution, if not more, and I will both intuitively and strategically work to find the best one for each situation.
I feel as though I specialize in and am known for my positive and proactive attitude partnered with my keen intuition and varied skillset that allows me to achieve successes in projects from many angles. I have been a strong writer from a young age, partnered with a photography skillset, years of both physical and digital graphic design experience, a physical sculpture skill set, administration experience, freelance entrepreneurial work, I have both the attitude and skills to achieve my own personal goals and help others achieve and manifest their own.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I would love to work with people in freelance work capacities and I am also open to new long-term positions in social media work, content creation, working as a designer, creative facilitator and more. I am open to producing content, working with graphics, art placement and consulting, as well as creating my own art for installations (both 2D and 3D). I am open to and would love to do more tarot events, both private and public, and I am available for private readings, booking available through the form on my website (linked below). I am always open to more modeling experiences with fashion, runway, and in print. I am very appreciative of support in the digital realm as well with my social medias linked at the end of this article. I am starting the process of regular posting on my Substack newsletter, and Youtube channel for content about art, spirituality, personal growth, fashion and design and would so appreciate any and all support subscribing to those channels, partnered with my Tiktok content on @gardensprites.
