Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Tepera.
Dylan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey to becoming a Teen Beach Champion and personal trainer began in March of 2016. It was during my high school junior year to where my father and I attended an NSpire Sports League competition to watch a good friend. It was at this show where I discovered there was a teen division, and felt with proper training and nutrition, I could one day be a champion.
My 57-year-old father and I (17 at that time) dedicated our lives to 7 months of intense training. We both stepped on stage on October 2017 and took first places in our perspective divisions. It was at the very moment winning on stage that I knew I’ve found my destiny in life. Not only did I want to continue to train and build my body, but I wanted to help others change their lives through fitness, exercise and nutrition.
I was fortunate to gain the attention of Natasha Reyes – who owns Fitt Life Fitness in League City, Texas. Natasha took me under her wing and taught me to become a top-rated personal trainer in our area. Since this first show, I’ve competed in four other shows winning first places in each of them. In September 2018, I’ll be turning 20 and will start my journey to compete against men. My next competition is October 13, 2018. My goal is to continue with college, personal train, and keep pushing my body for competition to obtain my Pro Card status.
My biggest reward in life is to one day own a business that helps people to improve their lives. My passion is to help all others reach their perspective best! That should be the mindset we all share.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Really, my struggles started when I was in fourth grade. My parents divorced and life had changed drastically. I was fortunate to live with my father because he helped me get involved in multiple sports, even taught me weight training and nutrition.
But really, the biggest impact in my life was while I was in 8th grade, my 23-year-old brother died to complications of PTSD after serving four years in the Army – fighting in Iraq. Specialist Dustin Ray Tepera. Even to this day, I wear Dustin’s dog-tags around my neck. Most people don’t know, but when I compete on stage, I carry his dog-tags in my posing trunks.
My dad, sister and I have dedicated all of our training and competing in Dustin’s honor. I feel everyone has daily struggles, but it’s how you handle situations will determine your destiny. What this really means is “you can’t always control what happens to you, but you have complete control over how you respond to it.”
Personal Trainer and Coach – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At this time, I’m a student at a junior college working on my basics. I earn my income and passion as a personal trainer.
My dad David Tepera just started a business (Ageless-muscle.com) in the health and fitness industry, and our goal is to build a family brand business that I will one day help its success.
Over the past several years, I’ve become well-known in my community due to winning multiple competitions and my success as a personal trainer.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The first proudest moment was my very first show – winning first place. It was that moment that changed my life.
But, really, each show has become the next proudest moment because my body is continuing to improve, and I’m on 19 years old. Also, I was very proud to be featured in a segment on Inside Edition with my dad David Tepera in June of 2017.
They were shooting a father/son duo for a Father’s Day special. My dad and I were one of the three duos chosen across the country.
