Meet Earlmetria Perry of Finesse Hair 4 Queens in Northest Houston/Humble

Today we’d like to introduce you to Earlmetria Perry.

Earlmetria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I graduated high school in 2011, I wanted to be an accountant because I was really great with numbers and I wanted to make a lot of money; as everyone does. So, I immediately attended college and studied at U of H (Main) for two years while working at Whataburger overnight. One day, I was sitting in my car and I heard a commercial hiring for experienced braiders at a salon, granite I did not know anything about hair nor experienced with braiding, I was just ok with doing braids (being self-taught) for some extra income. I got the job to be a part-time braider at the salon while still attending school and working at Whataburger. After about a year, I had someone to ask me did I ever consider becoming a hairstylist because I had the “look.” Of course, the answer was no because I had never really done hair besides “messing” up my own, lol, not practiced or study in hair but I love seeing the transformation and the art of hair that others around me would create. So, it did inspire me to consider doing hair “on the side.” In 2015, I decided to take a year off at U of H and attend beauty school to obtain my cosmetology license. Oh was that a roller coaster!! It seems like everything began to turn upside down, bend backwards, flip over and everything on top of losing my grandmother and two great aunts in the process. That year was one of the hardest years of my life but with the support system from family, teachers and close friends I had to encourage me helped me finish on time and get certified. I began to work at the same salon now as a licensed hairstylist. Oh, was that a struggle to get through, I had soooo many mess ups, comebacks, complaints, dissatisfaction, tormenting words thrown at me apartment and keep completely flooded out, no savings, living in hotel, eating military food and wearing hand me down clothes from donation centers but I took it and applied it to get better with practice and learning just how I was applying in school and had to keep moving even though I kept getting knocked back. Unfortunately, after about two years, I was let go due to the disagreement of me wanting to eventually venture off and grow. I had to start to service clients in my home, not by choice, but I had to make it work.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey definitely has not been a smooth road and still is not. One of the loves of my life, my grandmother, passed away; tragedy crushed me to pieces.

In 2016, I and my now fiancé was staying on the first floor of an apartment and woke up 5 am one morning to the complete apartment flooded with about three feet of water and was riding by the minute. We had to climb out of my bedroom window to find out the water right outside was about my head to stand flat-footed on the ground. My Jeep, at the time, had water covered up to the windows and had to walk worth just my purse and a wooden stick for safety reasons. Literally lost all the possessions we had but God sustained us through it all and made away when we could not see a way at all.

Wow, this definitely inspired me and motivated me to do harder in my business! Hearing her testimony of trials and tribulations encouraged me to never give up, keep striving and to stay focused . I loved the fact that she took advantage of the opportunities around her and that she wasn’t afraid to walk through doors .
