Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Lumpkin.
Ebony, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I remember going to the MAC counter in high school and playing around with the eyeshadows not having a clue about what I was doing. The first time I played in shadow I was looking for something to remove the eyeshadow and used adhesive glue. I quickly learned to always read labels! Shortly after I entered college in 2006 at The University of Oklahoma, I realized how obsessed I was with makeup. A huge part of me enjoyed makeup during the college years was because my Mama would not let me wear makeup growing up – she did not play! Throughout college, my peers would always ask me to do their makeup because they liked I did my own makeup. I would do anyone’s makeup that would ask me, and I was eventually asked to do makeup for the pageants at OU. This experience was my first exposure in applying makeup on others in large groups…it would be 10-15 people at a time. Looking back, I should’ve been scared but I wasn’t; however, I did feel the pressure of delivering a perfect service.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, my road has been smooth for me. I have realized that my business grows when I take chances on myself and give 100% and the exact opposite happens when I don’t put for the effort. If I had to come up with a few challenges, one would be giving my business all of me when I have a full-time job as a high school counselor. Scheduling can be conflicting at times; however, my clients know I am super flexible and always give time options. As an artist, one of my challenges is finding the perfect lighting and having what I see in person translate on camera. I’m literally purchasing a new light after this interview LOL!

One feature I always strive for in my business is to provide an atmosphere that is comfortable for all clients.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing outside and making up the most random games was my favorite childhood memory. We would come up with the most innovative games. Back then, the Olympics were big, and we’d use my Daddy’s wooded logs as balance beams in the grass because we all thought we were the next Dominique Dawes LOL and judge each other with a score and everything. One of the funniest games I remember playing involved putting on headphones plugged into a portable CD player. The person with the headphones on had the volume on the highest it could go so they weren’t able hear themselves when they sang out loud. The rest of us would listen and laugh because they were LOUDLY off-key LOL! Fun times for sure, shout out to my Mo City childhood friends, love y’all!
