Meet Eduardo Flores Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Flores Jr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I think I was always meant to do something in the arts. Early on in my childhood, I had access to great music and films, I would spend hours absorbing them. That time spent consuming was one of the bigger influences on my journey. I will fast forward to the moment I knew what type of creative I wanted to be. Throughout my time in college, I have been fortunate enough to be introduced to the visual arts. I began studying artists like Sue de Beer, Douglas Gordon, Mark Rothko, Pipilotti Rist, etc. I found myself connected to the various stories and messages that these artists were trying to convey. Through these connections, I realized that I wanted to be a visual artist myself. Ultimately I think my story is one about a kid that was captivated by the narratives. As I mature and grow as a person and an artist, I hope to captivate an audience with my own narrative.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always had struggles with my confidence. Usually, I’ll work on something for hours and eventually doubt will set in. Thankfully, I have a really good support group, they set my mind straight.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I suppose the best way to put it, is that I am an Independent artist. I make whatever feels right at the time, with whatever medium I feel best works with the message. I’m only known by the few that follow me on social media right now, the goal is to have an art piece in the MFAH. I’m very self-aware of where I am right now. All the things I make are about very personal topics. I feel that I should be honest with myself and not cover topics that I haven’t experienced yet. As I grow, my art will change. I want to be sure to take my time now and be 100% set on an idea.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First off, I wouldn’t be who I am without my sisters and my mother. My family, in general, is supportive of my decisions, but my mother and my sisters have been the most instrumental in my life. Of course, I have my very close friends as well, and they know exactly who they are. Those friends are the ones I send rough drafts and ideas to. They have never failed to give me constructive criticism with whatever I come up with. Wherever I end up career-wise, just know I wouldn’t have made it without them.
