Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward “Doc” Amey. (Edward Amey Sr.)
Thanks for sharing your story with us Doc. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up with a rough upbringing, having no biological father due to his early death and a mother on drugs until I was a teen, I had a very early start to a life of drugs and street violence. By the age of 17, I was already on my way to becoming a father to the first of four children. At the age of 21, I found myself incarcerated for the first of what I did not know would be of three times. For some people, all it takes is one trip to prison and they can change their life for the better. It took me three trips before I found the motivation and courage to truly change my life. Despite the desolate environment I grew up in, hard times I faced, and a lot of self-sabotaging decisions I made-I am no longer the person I used to be. Change for me had to start from the inside before it could penetrate on the outside through my actions. It wasn’t until my third stay in prison, that I found my reason for an everlasting change. A short story to explain how this happened to me: I was working in a hog barn when my parole was denied. In a moment of desperation, I called out to God pleading with Him to show me direction for my life. I told Him that if He is really like everyone says He is real, then He would get me out of that situation and I would change my life and live for His glory. Later on that same night, God used a man whom I had never spoken to before to show me the next steps I could take which eventually led to my release from prison.
From that day forward, I have been serving the Lord and doing the work He has called me to do. In 2016, I launched Lost and Found Ministries which a ministry where we can be the hands and feet of Jesus. We are very active in our local community and love to meet people where they are to serve their need and give them Jesus. Through Lost and Found, we are able to do community outreaches like backpack drives, and Thanksgiving meal giveaways. We look to go to the desolate places of our community and start to rebuild them. We enjoy pulling at a youth person who has no one to guide him or her and be that person who does just that. In February 2018, I became an ordained minister to preach the gospel. I have spoken to over 2000 youth children and young adults, motivating them and encouraging them. Since 2014, I have been a TDCJ volunteer, where I go into the prison to preach the word of God. In December of 2016, I published my first book, Kept – A storm before the calm. Which is the story of my personal testimony? How I live my life today is strictly based on what God instructs me to do for His glory.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No. This has not been a smooth road. When the enemy (devil) knows that you have a calling on your life, he will use anyone and most things to try and stop you from reaching your destination. One bump in my life has been breaking the generational curse of drug abuse, crime, and violence-which was not an easy task-but through Christ, all of it was broken off of my life. I don’t face those same temptations that I used to before Christ. Another struggle was being a good and active father to my four children. You can’t be a good and active father from prison or the streets. God has redeemed me even in that area. I have restored my relationships with my biological children. God even took it a step further and has given me a second chance at fatherhood through three step-children with my wife. Today, I still face challenges, but I now have the understanding and knowledge in handling my problems with prayer and dependence on God.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lost And Found Ministries – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a foundation and what sets you apart from others.
Lost and Found Ministries is a 501 c3 non-profit religious ministry that has been called to our local community and worldwide to serve the physical and spiritual needs of lost people and along the way, help them to be found through Jesus Christ. We do this by bringing hope to those who are lost and forgotten by having Christ-centered mentoring relationships between people (whether incarcerated or living in the free world) and volunteers from Lost and Found. Our goal is to inspire breakthroughs from the way life treats desolate children and achieve immediate, lasting change in their lives. Seeking to put God’s love into action, we plan to develop a non-profit youth development center for youth and young adults that come from broken family homes. Our efforts will lead people worldwide into a flourishing relationship with Jesus Christ. As a company, we are most proud of our 2018 Backpack Drive, at which time we gave away almost 500 school supply-filled backpacks, fed over 400 people and had almost 1000 people in attendance that were given a little bit of Jesus. The thing that sets us apart is our humbleness to only do what God has instructed us to do. We do not let our own desires get in the way of completing the work that God wants us to do.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I won’t speak prematurely about our future plans, but I can tell you that God has major things in store for Lost and Found. I also will say that we will continue with our annual backpack drive which is held the weekend before school starts and Thanksgiving outreach which is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving day. I live every day expecting God to do the miraculous and know that big changes are on the horizon.
