Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisha Weatherton.
Hi Elisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s school for girls in Africa, I made a bold move in 2007 to birth the concept of Lovie’s Pearls, a non-profit organization created to empower teen moms. I knew this was my “calling” as it became my God-given assignment to extend growth opportunities and educational resources to teen moms, as they re-focus their lives as mothers and create a positive future for themselves and their children. This is my life’s mission and passion! After much thought, prayer, and consideration, it was clear that I genuinely needed to honor my families who are credited for my determination and passion for serving others. Representing my paternal and maternal family history and culture, I landed on the names of my two grandmothers, Lovie and Pearlina. Combining these names gave the vision true meaning: love, and the process in which pearls are formed (through lots of irritation and determination). In 2012, after relocating to Houston, Texas and settling into my new life, Lovie’s Pearls officially became a reality, being registered as a 501 (c)(3). Over the next several years through studying, researching, and networking, various concepts and ideas were put to paper as the mission and vision materialized. Then, in 2019, the real work got underway as Lovie’s Pearls began touching the lives of teen moms in the Houston Metropolitan Area through the assistance of the amazing Social Workers in the Parent Education Program in Klein Independent School District. I owe much gratitude to Dr. Pamela Ogletree, Melanee Rivera, and Elizabeth Leonard for their belief in my vision and trust in me as they referred their teen moms to Lovie’s Pearls.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and in many ways, that’s been part of the journey that shaped our impact.
One of the earliest challenges was earning trust. Introducing a new vision, especially one centered on empowering teen moms to thrive, not just surviving, required us to be very intentional about how we communicated our mission. We had to refine our language to clearly reflect dignity, opportunity, and long-term self-sufficiency, rather than reinforcing narratives of dependency, such as government assistance.
Access was another hurdle. Building relationships with teen moms and their families takes time, consistency, and cultural sensitivity. We’re incredibly grateful to our partners in Klein ISD’s Parenting Education Program, whose support opened doors for meaningful connection and engagement. However, expanding that level of access across other districts has not been as seamless, and continues to require persistence and partnership-building.
And like many grassroots nonprofits, funding remains an ongoing challenge. Securing consistent support, whether through grants, sponsorships, or individual donors can be difficult, particularly when smaller organizations are often held to the same expectations as long-established institutions, but without the same resources. Despite this, we continue to push forward, driven by the belief that the young moms (and their babies) we serve deserve every opportunity to succeed.
While the road hasn’t been easy, each challenge has strengthened our foundation and deepened our commitment to breaking cycles of poverty…one teen mom, one family, and one future at a time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The work I do through Lovie’s Pearls is deeply connected to my life’s purpose: serving others. As far back as I can remember, I have always been drawn to helping people navigate difficult circumstances. When I encounter someone who is hurting, I naturally want to help, and when I am unable to provide the support they need, I feel that burden deeply. It is a calling that brings both incredible joy and profound heartbreak.
That same reality exists in my work with teen moms. There are moments of immense celebration when I see a young mother accomplish goals that once seemed out of reach; graduating from high school, enrolling in college, earning a certification, starting a career, getting married, completing a degree, or watching her child thrive and reach important milestones. Those moments remind me why this work matters.
At the same time, there are difficult moments when a teen mom’s needs exceed our resources or when we lose contact with someone who could benefit from continued support. Those experiences fuel my determination to keep building stronger programs, partnerships, and opportunities so that more young mothers have access to the encouragement and resources they deserve.
What sets Lovie’s Pearls apart is our holistic approach. We understand that when you empower a teen mom, you impact an entire family. Our focus extends beyond the young mother to include her child, her partner, her parents, and the broader support system surrounding her. We strive to address every aspect of her journey; from education and career development to parenting, wellness, life skills, and community connection.
Whether it’s having conversations with parents, welcoming partners and family members into our workshops, connecting families to resources, or simply providing a safe space where teen moms feel seen, valued, and supported, our goal is to walk alongside them as they build brighter futures.
What I am most proud of is seeing lives transformed, not just for a moment, but for generations. Every teen mom who graduates, earns a credential, secures meaningful employment, or creates a stable and nurturing environment for her child represents the possibility of breaking cycles and creating a new legacy. Being a small part of that journey is both an honor and a privilege.
What’s next?
The future of Lovie’s Pearls is incredibly exciting and filled with possibilities. While we are proud of the impact we have made through our educational, workforce development, and support programs, we believe our greatest work is still ahead of us.
Our long-term vision is to create family-structured housing communities for teen moms and their children, along with a transitional housing program that supports young mothers as they age out of traditional teen parenting services and prepare for independent living. Too often, young mothers face housing instability at the very moment they are trying to finish school, pursue careers, and build secure futures for their children. We want to change that reality.
We envision a comprehensive program that goes far beyond providing a roof over a family’s head. Each resident mom will participate in a personalized life plan designed to help her achieve educational, professional, financial, and personal goals. These plans will include completing a high school diploma, participating in college and career readiness assessments, pursuing higher education or workforce training, developing financial literacy skills, creating and maintaining budgets, establishing savings goals, learning household management skills, strengthening parenting practices, and building healthy support networks.
Our goal is not simply to provide temporary housing but to equip young mothers with the knowledge, resources, confidence, and stability needed to build self-sufficient, thriving lives for themselves and their children. We want every teen mom who enters our program to leave with the tools necessary to achieve long-term success and break cycles that often persist across generations.
Of course, bringing this vision to life will require significant funding, strategic partnerships, legal and organizational infrastructure, and broad community support. But I am encouraged by the growing number of individuals, businesses, schools, and organizations that recognize the importance of investing in young families.
What I look forward to most is seeing the generational impact of this work. When we empower a teen mom, we are not only changing one life, we are influencing the future of her child, her family, and her community. My hope is that one day the young women we serve will return as homeowners, professionals, entrepreneurs, mentors, and leaders who can help guide the next generation. That is the future I am working toward: creating pathways to stability, opportunity, and lasting transformation for families who simply need someone to believe in their potential.
