Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth and Chris Toc and Christian Harrison.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started early 2005 as a part-time groomer at a self-serve dog wash. I slowly started building up the grooming clientele. After having my second child at the end of 2005, I became full-time because of the demand. The owner was moving on, and offered to sell my husband and I the business. In May 2007, we became first-time business owners. 10 years later we moved locations, changed the name, but never lost a beat. We started off as a local mom and pop self-serve dog wash and are now one of Houston’s top-rated specialty grooming salons.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being that we were first-time business owners there were plenty of experiences to learn from. We didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into, or where to begin. We had no formal education in knowing how to run a business. All we knew is we were good at what we did and how to take care of our customers. Everything else was learned along the way. The biggest struggle was having to find a common ground legally to protect us and the dogs in our care. Another struggle is that in our line of work, the customer isn’t always right, and that is very hard when customers are like family to us.
Please tell us about The Tailored Tail.
We are a specialty dog grooming salon. What sets us apart from everyone else is being a cage-free, appointment only facility. We are the perfect medium of a regular grooming salon and a mobile groomer. We focus on communicating with the owner and build one-on-one relationships with the dog to create that bond. We also do not keep your dog caged for hours before and after the grooming process. As soon as you arrive at your appointment time your dog’s stylist gets started on them right away, and you receive a call 15 min before they are ready for pick up. We are also very detail oriented and love giving your pup the perfectly tailored groom to fit their needs.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I would have known I would be in this position, I would have received the formal education to help avoid some situations that did occur throughout the years. I would have known what I was doing and getting myself into from the start, instead of the “learn as you go” path we took.
