Meet Elsa Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elsa Torres.

Elsa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a bilingual realtor. I am originally from Venezuela, but I then moved with my husband to the USA about 20 years ago. Since then, my life has completely changed. I could say I was reborn in this country, where I had learned English and the American culture, which I have grown to love!!

I graduated in Special Education in Venezuela and worked as a teacher for nine years, a profession that I enjoyed and thought was my true calling, but all this changed when I moved to Houston, TX. As soon as I got to this city, I completely fell in love with real estate. I was so inspired that I told my husband we should get into the real estate business. We began to flip houses in Houston and surrounding areas nine years ago. This experience helped us get knowable in construction, remodeling and the process of buying or selling a house. I was so fascinated with the process a family or investor needs to go through in order to buy or sell property that I decided to become a Real Estate Agent.

What I learned from becoming into a Real Estate Agent, is that I love the idea of helping people find their perfect home while listening to their wonderful family stories and life experience. I truly believe this is my real passion!

Another passion of mine is volunteering, and I am pleased and honored to say that I am the Event Coordinator of Casa Cultural de Las America, a non-profit organization. Which its main purpose is to preserve and promote the cultural diversity and arts of the Americas in the United States and Europe.

I hope you enjoyed reading my story and was able to learn something from it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have had ups and downs along the way, but my biggest struggle was the language. Since my primary language is Spanish, it was difficult to communicate with others when I arrived in the USA.

Communicating with others was an activity I enjoy doing, however because of the language barrier I was unable to express myself for a very long time. I noticed that I began to become more secluded and shy which made me feel more insecure. However, I did not want this to define the rest of my life. So, I began to look for ways to learn English. The main goal that helps me keep going was to be able to have a job to help provide for my family.

After I was able to overcome my language difficulties, I began to look for job opportunities and became interested in Real Estate. After finding more information on this particular job, I realized that this would be perfect for me. I could talk to different people every day and use my new learning of English to be able to express myself more than before. You could almost say that because of my language barrier I was able to find a job fit for me.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a Real Estate Agent with JLA Realty. I am an intuitive, discipline, and committed professional who has a passion for her career. I always give 100% of myself in each client and each transaction, because I know buying or selling a home is a big and important life decision. Then, with my strong background as an investor, it also helps me be able to guide my clients in the right direction when it comes to investing in their home. Being a bilingual agent has also given me the opportunity to work with clients from different backgrounds and cultures. What I take pride the most is one of the questions that I ask each of my clients. I ask them to identify what is important to them, what are their preferences. This is a very simple, yet effective question. Once they reveal their answers, I can use this information to tailor my research to their criteria and give exactly what they want. What sets me apart from others is that I listen to my clients and try to bond with them so I can give them a home that is made for them. This is the most important when it comes to my job, not the money but the knowledge that I was able to help a client find their ideal home.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was addicted to soccer. I used to watch the world cup with my father during my early childhood and played several soccer games with my family at home. During school, I was part of the girls’ soccer team. I played the goal-getter position and I enjoyed this position. It was very exhilarating!

I was a very sporty and free spirit kid, average student, and definitely a movie lover.

Which aided in my curiosity about the world and other cultures. I began to love to meet and hang out with people from different cultures, which helped me understands different ways on how to express yourself and other forms of living.

My childhood has been such a key factor in my personality, and I feel very blessed knowing I was very fortunate in having such an open childhood.
