Meet Emily Calidonio of I ♥️ Conchas in South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Calidonio.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Conchas are a nostalgic food for me. I have memories of going to our local Panaderia in Eado and getting conchas and walking back home as we ate our conchas. In case you don’t know what a concha is, they are a shell-shaped sweet bread usually made of vanilla or chocolate flavor.

Over the years I developed an allergy to dairy and I started looking for ways to make my favorite foods dairy-free and discovered many people like me are allergic too or are transitioning to a vegan lifestyle and just because we can’t have dairy doesn’t mean we can’t have our favorite childhood foods hence the Good for your Conchas (con*scious) idea was born!

Though we are in the beginning stages of bringing you the best vegan Good for you conchas (con*scious) you will be able to start finding us in local farmer’s markets in Houston very soon!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With being a mom and having a full time and having a business, it gets hard to balance life. Though it’s been a slow start to my conchas movement, we are full stream ahead and looking forward to bringing the best Good for you conchas (con*scious) treats.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Delicious conchas for those that still want to enjoy their favorite childhood treat minus the guilt and dairy allergies. They are Good for you conchas (con*scious). What im most proud of is being able to bring a piece of my culture and childhood memories through a treat that everyone adores.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Eado most of my childhood a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood where all my tias lived within 5-10 mins from each other. As a kid, I would often create food recipes to sell with my cousin but they were all a fail lol. I never dreamed I would actually be interested in the food business as an adult.
